One correction, Mr. Pit.. phpBB2 should work with PHP3. We've bent over backwards in several places, implementing PHP4-specific library functions on our own so that we remain compatible with 3. Now, that said, we'd very much like to hear from people who've been testing on PHP3, since none of the dev...

The average avatar is probably well under 15k. That means you could fit 2000 of them in your 30mb..

You'll need to include bbcode.php. You need to run make_bbcode_uid(), that'll give you your UID. That needs to get stored in the posts_text table along with your final message text. You then need to run bbencode_first_pass(), passing it the UID you created above. Then you have your post text, for th...

Say what? The whole reason we went to the templates (and everybody wanted us to go to templates) was so it'd be easier to make your own design..

So I downloaded it, and had a peek through the archive. This thing is written in C as PHP extension. So yeah, it'll be bloody fast. But it's not something that can be installed on a server without root, AFAIK.

Is it just me, or does that not describe their implementation? We're not about to re-write everybody's nice purty templates for something that "might" be faster..

Actually, the whole emoticon-in-code thing is by design.. Even though it seems weird, it was intentional. So we're not gonna "fix" it. We may be inclined to change its behaviour in the release after 2.0, though. ;)

How's the [code] bbcode look?

Hey guys.. I just checked in some stuff that I hope will fix the various layout weirdnesses with bbcode we've been having lately. There shouldn't be any more possibility of a normal line of code making the page stretch all wide 'cause it won't break lines. It should also show indentation of code tha...

I'd just do it at the start and end of first_pass. Should be fairly quick, but remember: first_pass isn't done at page-view time, which is the whole point of the 2-pass bbcode system. We only do the (faster) 2nd pass at pageview time, the first pass is done before the post is stored.

Hmm. That's difficult. You'll need to stick something before the rest of bbcode is processed.. It'll need to do something to all the code inside the tags that makes the rest of the bbcode processing ignore it. Maybe change [ and ] into some other chars, and then back again after the rest of bbcode p...
