Re: phpBBv2.0x w/o Mods

Thanks Doc. I see that RC1 is getting closer and closer to release, so the debate is whether or not to stick it out until the RC1 release, or get v2 up and running.

In any event, I'll check out the links you took the time post and see what they can tell me about minimzing spambot damage. Thanks.

Re: phpBB2 vs phpBB3, my point of view...

After playing around with v3, I must say that I find the user interface much easier to use than v2. And yes, while there might be some additional features included with v3 that may not appeal to some users, I think that including them upfront is an advantage rather than having users track down the a...

Re: Install in root?

Out of curiosity, is there any advantage to installing the software in the root?

Great, thanks! And yes, my board will be a public board so all of those spam fighters will certainly be needed.

phpBBv2.0x w/o Mods

I hope this question hasn't been asked before... What is phpBBv2.0.22 like for spam control, and over-all management without any mods installed? I only ask because I will be upgrading to v3 RC1 once it is released, so I don't want to spend a lot of time installing mods on v2.0.22 if only to lose the...

Re: The hardest question of all... how do you get new users?

Indeed, the board should serve a purpose - but if there is another board already that serves the same purpose that is older and well known and already established it will most likely be difficult to compete with it. Also, forum users do not like joining or posting in empty forums - so you will need...

Re: Why would you remove the Powered by phpBB text?

I don't see the reason for removing the phpBB logo from the bottom of the page. Might as well give credit where credit is due.

Re: My Opinion on phpBB 3.0

Being new to the whole phpBB community, I am very impressed with v3. While I have a v2 version of phpBB up and running on a small system, I can't wait for the RC1 version of v3 to be released.

Re: The hardest question of all... how do you get new users?

Does anyone know about your forum? If you have friends or others you know online or offline, be sure to tell them about your forum site. If you're pretty sure they're interested in your forum's subject, they'll probably join because they know you. It worked for me, I've got loads of my friends that...

Re:

And i tell you Word of Mouth is the best technique. Ok, now for the obvious question...Or maybe not so obvious :) How do you generate word of mouth? Is it possible to have one (a busy board for example) without the other (word of mouth). Obviously controversy helps, but what if you run a site that ...

Re: PHPBB3 doesn't show any forum for guests!

My guess is that it has something to do with the permissions and who you've allowed to see/view your forums. I'm sure you've done this, but have to taken a second look at how the permissions are setup?

Re: Cant see new forums added

I ran in to the same problem too, and scratched my head for a while trying to figure out what the solution was.

What you need to do is edit the permissions of the forum. Give the groups and/or specific users access to the forum and you should be good to go.

Thanks arod-1. That did the trick perfectly :) As soon as phpBB v3 RC1 is released, I'll be updating board and give the steps you outlined below a try. Thanks again.
