This was a planned feature, but I forgot to make it, I'll add it in either in next version or in a new version after MODDB

You have to create a new modx file with the instructions between version 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 for example.

and include this in the contrib folder when packaging then automod will pick that up and let you update using those instructions
