Re: PHPBB3 Slow ...

If this is the board I think it is, then the board has numerous modifications installed to make it faster, especially designed for its size.

Re: Security tips

-"Repair" my network connection when the cable blinks out. You could argue that, in changing a network connection settings, you are interfering with other users. Perhaps Windows should have a true "Powers Users" group, but it would be hard to know where to draw the line. It is not difficult to imag...

Re: Clean URL

Though, you cannot remove the extension altogether, but you could leave it just as a full stop, ".". Why not? I meant, natively, in phpBB, as it exists right now. $phpEx = substr(strrchr(__FILE__, '.'), 1); include($phpbb_root_path . 'common.' . $phpEx); Of course, if you want to modify the code, t...

Re: Security tips

Well, VMs do offer a great number of security benefits, but they are also prone to mass pwnage. I would have assumed it would add an extra layer of security, but are you saying that this is a worse situation than running public services on the same box as he uses for general computing? I had though...

Re: Security tips

im thinking of maybe using a better operating system (please dont say Vista lol ) Windows Vista has a far superior security set-up to Windows XP, especially considering that the latter is eight years old last week. Of particular note is the security hardening around services: services, such as your...

Re: Clean URL

Making them persistent is a no-brainer, for all the reasons described in the W3C article. I'm not sure if anyone else picked-up on this, but phpBB URIs are persistent -- if you ignore the session ID part, a deliberate non-persistency which only shows up for users who do not wish to use session cook...

Re: Bot Question

Why would Google bothering spidering material that is not for public viewing that people have to take the time to register for, not be much of a search engine. Like I said to my knowledge, 3 1/2 years of Google bots and never spidered our private off topic forum but spiders the other 13 topics that...

Re: TPB sold...

ISPs are constantly being pressured to report and shutdown people who are using torrents mainly because they are used to acquire illegitimate media. If Torrents start become a source to share things legally, it might aid in allowing this technology to further advanced instead of all its uses be lim...

Re: Is IE6 a priority anymore?

Believe it or not, Windows Mobile uses a browser based on IE6. That's not going to change any time soon, either. Of course, you'll be serving a simplified style sheet to mobile customers anyway.

Re: Hijacking other modders threads

We can agree that mod competition is good, but is the modification's thread in the released modifications' sub-forum the best place to discuss it? It can be crowded enough dealing with multiple support requests simultaneously.

Re: How is PHPBB so fast?

The template is cached. But what goes in the template will vary per-user, per-session, and through time. If you simply cached the complete template result, it would not be very useful. Queries are cached because some (but far from all) of them can be immediately re-used for each person -- like smili...

Re: What law applies to my forum?

Just try to be on the safe side. The United States, for example, will not always accept that they have "no jurisdiction" when something affects their citizens, wherever the server is and whatever nationality the owner is. So if you happen to venture onto any US land at any time, you could end up in ...
