How did you update? Manual update using the 3.0.5 to 3.0.7-PL1 update package on this site. And some observations. Although this does not address your issue directly, I have found a Question and Answer CAPTCHA to be nearly 100% effective. It is now built into phpbb - no MOD required, but your style...
