Why no Full Walk-Thru and RC6/7 Hell

In all previous versions of 2.x someone used to create a walk-thru file of any update release. This was really useful because a) Heavily modded boards could be patched manually - easily b) Admins could choose not to apply some patches if that section didn't apply to their board (such as PM's never u...

Re: Spam

phpbb3 has a stronger captcha mechanism which you can adjust to make it harder to read. Another good feature is RBL checking of IP addresses. This is a good feature as if another board is spammed before yours and the IP is reported your board can reject the registration or post. What would be nice i...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

Well maybe this is a different bug. I don't know about the the user who PM'd me. He says he ran RC1 to RC2 update and still has the problem. Here is the sequence which I discovered the problem: 18-Jun-07 I upgraded a v2 board to RC1 19-Jun-07 whilst seo'ing I discovered that under certain conditions...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

I think we need to be absolutely sure here. I have just had a pm:
I have updated to RC2 2 days ago. How are you able to exploit my website and post ..... ?
So that is a user who updated to RC2 and still has a board which is an open spamfest.

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

I think there is a care of duty issue here.

There are boards out there with a specific exploit. Board operators need to know that there is an exploit and that their board is vulnerable.

Is there any harm in posting an official announcement about this?

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

Yes, a tracker was submitted and I believe actioned on. I have just tested a fresh install on a new server and I'm please to say the exploit has been fixed. Top marks to the team for that. There is, however, still a potential problem for users who have not patched their boards. I don't know if the R...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

There are two threads going on here at the moment. I've said all I have said about the SEO point and I still stand by it. --- On the point about the exploit I very disappointed with the blase attitude of some. This is a SERIOUS issue which is not being addressed. I do not know about new installs but...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

That's a bit of a crass attitude to take. If it were not for some wailing voices telling it how it is free software vendors would get delusions of grandeur and everyone would congratulate the emperors on their new attire. phpBB is not an application run by one talented geek during his lunch hour - p...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

That's because we fixed that issue about one day after RC1. Which issue would that be? I tested the exploit yesterday on a user at random. That person has the exploit and now knows his board is a possible spamfest. If you have fixed it for newer installs shouldn't there be an announcement sent out ...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

So are you saying that no template modifications need to be made and that "out of the box" phpbb3 is set correctly? Are you content that boards out there are configured correctly so with the default settings: a) bots can not read restricted forums b) bots can not utilise the email a friend system c)...

Re: RC1 to RC2 - Styles

That would be one reason for potential new installees to wait until final release then.

As a fix I guess the following would work:

backup styles/*

copy styles/rizzostyle to styes/prosilver (overwrite)

run the patch on prosilver

copy styles/prosilver to styles/rizzostyle (overwrite)

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

I think there is a lot of confusion here and certainly a lot of confusion over the terms: is registered is guest is bot and the way templates work. Take three users: Happy Larry (registered user) Googlebot (bot user) Jonny Punter (guest) The way I see it is that "out of the box" Happy Larry and Goog...

Re: RC1 to RC2 - Styles

I have a similar problem. Ran the patch option which successfully updated the php files, and pro / sub silver templates. But obviously it won't update my own custom styles. Looking at what changed in prosilver I see: theme/ tweak.css forms.css content.css common.css colours.css buttons.css bidi.css ...

Re: Out of the box phpBB 3 is awful for SEO

why playing with limits if you're unsure about what are you doing, especially when it won't make any difference SEO wise Do you mean why bother feeding SE's more efficient content than guests? I think it will make a big difference. If there are two forums one as-is and one with all the guff taken a...
