Re: User requesting all posts to be removed !

Since Web content can legally be stored in any number of places other than the point of origin, is there a procedure defined by law to clean up archived, mirrored, or fair use instances of copyrighted content? What I am going to say next might not be related to this specific scenario, but the last ...

PC repairmen aren't to be trusted (news report)

Sure, it seems like a no-brainer, but when Sky News in the UK dropped a brand new laptop off at several repair shops in London (equipped with a key logger and sneaky video recording software) they caught employees accessing personal data, hacking accounts for banking and social networking sites, an...

Re: VB Customer forum down switching to phpbb!

I doubt that's really the reason he switched. Any script (specially paid ones who have many people developing all sorts of MODs, even unnecessary ones) will have plenty tools available to deal with spammers, unless they are really, really bad. Maybe he got tired of filling vB's pockets (after all, t...

Re: Blocking GMail accounts?

I have a gmail account and i wouldnt want to find myself banned from a forum purely because of that Banning an email address doesn't ban any users with that email address, it just disallows further registrations. Are you sure? And if the user attempts to change his current email to Gmail, will he b...

Re: Blocking GMail accounts?

You have a valid argument and I don't contest your numbers. But let's face it, this kind of problem can be very often on Gmail, but it's there on many different (and poor) services. I used to have many problems (and still do) with Hotmail (the last one was blocking entire IP ranges or different acco...

Re: Max character limit on phpBB

Sorry, I didn't write/remember right now the exact message. But one thing I remember, other than putting a lot of stress and load time on this DB from a board with thousands of posts. Let's say the whole post on phpBB 2 has 30.000 characters. And it's fully accepted. Then someone attemps to post wit...

Re: Max character limit on phpBB

At least more than 20-30.000 characters, including spaces. I am not sure, but I think phpBB 3 default limit should be 60.000 ? Can someone confirm that?

Re: Blocking GMail accounts?

Gmail isn't the #1 one, Yahoo is. Every single day (and I mean it) I receive one spam from them. And I don't use my email to send personal messages to anyone (or foward them), only to sell some products, and still keep receiving several spams on a daily basis. It's unbeliavable the amount of spam Ya...

Max character limit on phpBB

I was wondering what's the default max character limit for a post while using both phpBB 2 and 3. I noticed when you start posting very large texts with thousands of characters (at least on phpBB 2, some places I visited are still using), the final contents are removed by the system when you reach t...

Re: Trash mail providers

I think the whole idea of forcing people to give their real email addresses is bad. Bots and trolls can be contained in other ways (specially bots), and everyone can register a new email account anywhere. Anyone can do that easily, and create dozens of new addresses in a few minutes if wants to. Blo...

Re: To what extent would you protect your site?

Nothing, since every measures would be pointless. And of course, once your work has been published on the internet, everyone will have it for good, so trying to prevent others from making more copies is nothing but a waste of time. Copyright laws are only made to benefit large companies and organiza...

Re: Imageshack has been hacked

Some images were lost or at least are not available anymore. One from me and other from a friend... at least in both cases nothing was lost for good. I noticed some Imageshack pictures are disabled at random sometimes (returning 404 error), but this time seeing two pictures (being accessed by differ...

Re: User requesting all posts to be removed !

I think I'm missing something here...what does "soft-deleting" 1 post have to do with a user's entire posting history? Who says I am talking about one post? I mean all of them. If that's what the admin wants to do, he might apply that alternative to all his entire post history, even manually. It sh...

Re: User requesting all posts to be removed !

That could be easily solved if such MOD exists for phpBB. The posts will remain deleted, but can be restored whenever the admins want it. They can also read the contents of each one of those posts. And when they are deleted, the public can't see them again, only the admins. They will see a link/mess...

Re: About large boards/databases - important questions

I have a question about the impact larger databases might cause to a machine server/host. If your board stores, let's say, a million posts and 10K members, and you have 20 users online each/day accessing the board, and not consuming too much bandwith, your board will be OK with that? I mean, what's ...
