The chat system works a lot better now. Almost no bugs after I installed newer versions of some php modules. So if you have shell access, I'd say do a full upgrade (though I would avoid php 5.3 due to its memory bugs).

Ok as stated before, I would try it on a blank slate and 15 minutes later I have myself a fully working social network forum. everything works 100%, no flaws attached. This is on my local server with phpbb 3.7 not 3.8. I'm going to test it again, this time with the SEO version of phpbb

I don't know if it will work with the html comments but just use <?php blah blah... ?> or shorthand it with <? if your server supports it (it should).
