enabling HTML in phpbb3?

Post by marksegec » Sat Mar 29, 2008 3:34 am

ok, recently i wanted to allow html in posts, yes i know its a security wisk but ill cope.

in the administrator panel, ive been through it all, and i cannot find where i can enable it? i checked and it should be in general settings right? well its not in there, all the rest like phpbb and things are, but no html?

why? and how can i enable it? do i need to edit the conf.ini manually or something?

There is no option to enable it. If you wish to use HTML, it must be through it's bbCode equivalent by setting up corresponding bbCode's through the new custom bbCode feature :)

You can set up a new BB code which will enable the user to add a utube video to their post. Check out this link......

There is a mod out there that will enable that. But if you do that you will be on your own, plus to quote the author:
Repeat after me:

If my board gets hacked because I allowed somebody to post HTML it is my fault and I can not hold anyone else responsible. This modification is a major security vulnerability to my board, I am willing to put myself and any others who access this board in danger to have HTML capabilities.

I would also add this.

If you do this on shared hosting, you are not only putting your own systems at risk, you are also putting all those other users of that shared machine at risk.

How is it a security risk and how can it affect people so much?

Some tags could be abused. Off the top of my head, iframe could put some users at risk because a user might frame a malicious website. Google "iframe exploits" to see what I mean.

Same thing goes, to an extent, with the embed tag. A Google search for that shows IE user particularly at risk - but also, there is the risk of abuse. People might embed videos from questionable websites... at least if you add a YouTube bbCode that uses the embed HTML you can limit things to YouTube only.

I installed this with Automod, purged the cache, refreshed my templates, cleared my own browser's cache, and still don't see an HTML permission like it says. Anyone have any clue how to get this working or what additional steps I have to take for it to work?

If you found a solution elsewhere you will need to seek support for it there. The Support Forum is not for MOD support, and more specifically phpBB.com in general is not the place to seek help with changes that remove security features.

Per the description of that page

It is by no means exhaustive and should be used in combination with the 'built-in' User FAQ within phpBB2, the community forums (particularly the Tutorials forum) and our IRC channe
it's indeed for phpBB 2. Not sure where you dug that one up but its not related to phpBB 3.0.x. Also please keep an eye on the post date of the last post in a topic. Its better to start a new topic than to bump such an old topic.

Allowing HTML posting is a very bad idea, I am an ethical hacker and some of the greatest faults I've seen were allowing user posted html... If done correctly it can be used for virus server jumping and can tear down entire companies within minutes by doing this you would be putting your website and all the users of your website at risk because if they open the page with the worm in it it can spread through there system into their email and into other systems and possibly cause a large scale problem that would all lead back to you, most forums that have the capability only use it for admin and have it turned off for everyone else becuase they understand the risks of ti
