Problem with Firefox 3

Post by Acorn » Wed Jun 18, 2008 12:25 pm

I upgraded to Firefox 3 this morning and now can't log onto my phpBB2.0.23 forum using Firefox. It accepts my username and password, puts me onto the list of those logged on, but doesn't actually let me in.

I have an add-on that allows me to view a site in an IE tab, and if I do this there's no problem, so thankfully I'm not completely shut out.

It doesn't seem to be a cookie issue as I have them allowed for all sites at the moment, and I haven't had a problem with any other site, including another phpBB2 site. I am completely at a loss.

Any thoughts?

Sounds to me like a cookie problem. Try running the AutoCookie script and see if it makes a difference.

No, the cookie dance hasn't helped - although I should have thought of it myself.

If it makes any difference, it seems that it is logging me on, because if I enter my username and password and hit enter, then switch the tab to IE (using a Firefox add-on, not going to a different browser), I'm logged on properly.

If I stay in Firefox my name appears as though I'm logged on, but I have 'log in' instead of 'log out' on the top menu, and it won't allow me to do anything - I can't reply, I can't see the non-public boards, and I can't access the ACP.

I can only think that the browser is re-loading the cached copy from before your login. What happens if you log in and then re-load the page? (if this works then you've found a bug in FF3  )

Sadly, that doesn't work either. Could still be a bug in FF though!

This is why I don't usually download major updates until they've been around for a few weeks - so that other people can do the testing! I was tempted by the promise of faster navigation this time - which it certainly has.

I'm bumping this up because I never solved it, and now another member has the same problem. We're probably the only two using Firefox 3, and can only get into the site by using the IE tab mod for Firefox.

I only have this problem on my laptop, which was upgraded to Firefox 3, and not on my desktop, which is new and had Firefox 3 installed from scratch.

I wondered if it might be connected with the Block Open Proxy Registrants mod. Does that sound likely, and if it is, can anyone suggest a solution? Or any other ideas as to what the problem might be.

If your cookie settings are correct, then it must be some MOD interfering.
Try putting a clean install into a different folder on your web server, then temporarily rename the folders to make the clean copy your active one, and see if the problem remains.

The cookie settings are fine. I forgot to mention that I do have another phpBB forum which is fine - it has quite a few mods, but not the proxy one, which is why I was thinking that it must be a mod.

The mods that are on the site with the problem, and not the other one are:
Disable Registration
Fix Caret Bug
Block Open Proxy (without Java)
Proxy Revealer
Simple Merge
Split Posts and Merge
Textual Confirmation

The only other difference is that the one that is OK is phpBB 2.0.22, and the one that isn't OK is phpBB 2.0.23.

firefox3 has problems with some css that works just fine in ff2 and everything else.

If you are using a style that is different from the standard ones for your board, this could be causing it.

Thanks very much - that makes sense. Someone else set the site up, and the style uses frames, which is not something I'm used to. Oh dear.

the only thing in phpbb I have ever seen that uses frames is the admin panel.
however, I have no idea what style(s) you are using.

try switching back to subSilver and see what happens.

It's a custom made style that makes the forums look like the outside site. I'm only responsible for the forums, so I think I'll have to get in touch with the person who created it.

frames create lots of problems, however, I doubt this is the cause here.

can you give us a link to the board so we can test.

It's http://spiritoflife.org.uk/discussion

Thanks.

[Edited to add that I've just discovered that it is no longer giving me problems in Firefox 3 - just the other member who has just upgraded. Weird.]
