Overloading the Server with PHP

Post by techies02 »

Hi,

Today my host suspended my account. When I contacted them, they said it was due to "overloading the server with PHP", then posted a copy and paste of some table which I didn't understand.

I've had his (small) forum running for a few years, and I never encountered a problem like this. Can anyone provide some insight as to what can cause this and how to prevent it from happening in the future?

here's the table they posted:

Your host is getting overloaded, so they are looking for anyone to blame.

Well I don't know Brf - Looks like a lot of PHP being used to me.

Get a database backup and take your business elsewhere.
You have not said if you are on free hosting or paid - which is it?

It's paid hosting.

They're not the best company...the site goes down quite frequently, but never was it suspended before.

Problem is, it was pre-paid until may (we do this every year to save a bit over month to month), so if I were to cancel/move to a different host, then I stand to lose quite a bit of $$ :x.

They reinstated the site and then about 20 minutes later, it was suspended again. I've asked them several times what can be the cause and they have yet to tell me. When I tried to call them, they said they can't connect me via phone to the tech support....it's so frustrating.

Thanks for the replies thus far

**edit***
Forgot to mention that nothing has been changed/updated on this site for months. The weekend in which I allocated some personal time to update to phpbb3, the server was down so I wasn't able to do the upgrade.

The problem with a lot of shared hosting is the number of sites that they cram onto a single server. There could well be several 100 sites on the one server and despite these hosts offering huge amounts of disc space and bandwidth you are sharing the servers resources and if you hit their limit then they will quickly suspend your site.
My son had his suspended within the first month of setting up his site.

Is your site very active? How many concurrent users do you normally have? Is it graphics intensive?

No it's been pretty dead lately. We only get maybe 10-15 or so new posts on an average day....maybe a little more sometimes but I don't think so.

As far as bandwith, the admin page states that we've used 13542.3MB (3%) so far for July - out of the 400000.0 we're allowed. Appearently last month we've used 10945.1.

In one of their replies in the ticket they told me to get a web programmer lol....we'll I am a programmer (c++), but this is just a little forum for a local car club, nothing special..you don't need to be a programmer to do what this forum requires (thanks for making it easy phpbb ;)).

It isn't graphic intensive btw, just a simple forum.

The next step will probably be that they will suggest you update your account to either a VPS or dedicated server.
That undoubtedly will put an end to your problem but is a problem of their making.
If they suggest the upgrade see if you can get your money back on account of them not being able to provide a service that is reliable and has problems due to site density on their server.

Thanks for the reply Jim_UK.

This was their last reply before closing the ticket:
Hello

After we unsuspended your account the same thing happened, as you can see below as soon as we unsuspend your account it runs too many PHP processes which overload server, if you want we can open open ftp access to your account so you can download your account's Access Logs and analyze them to see what is causing this problem.

I took a look at the log, but I'm unfamiliar with it really, so I can't tell if something strange is happening. Would anyone mind assisting me in taking a quick look at the log(s)?

Take a look at the three numeric columns after the "R".
Those are %CPU, %Mem, and TIme.
All three are pretty minuscule, so your host is just complaining about nothing.

I have known hosts shut down sites for using 20% of resources (that was the figure that shut my sons site) but 6%.
That is ridiculous.

I notice that there is no time entry with any of those figures. Odd

Thanks for the replies so far guys...maybe I will have to bite the bullet and switch, even if that does mean losing the cash we prepaid :(

the access log (the one they said would show the problem) is over 1000 pages long...this is the tail end of it . the rest of it is pretty much the same, is something weird happening?

Is there something i should look for in specific?

Once again, thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

Look like normal accesses to me. Do they only host boards that no one accesses?

Lots of those links are from google.

If you do not need your forum within google search results you could tell the googlebot to 'go away' with a robots.txt file in your forum root.

This page might help with that file

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I already have a robots.txt file on there, but I didn't include any google bots within it. I'll read those links and change the file accordingly.
