Robot.txt and posts

Post by Athlon101 » Thu Oct 16, 2008 1:01 pm

Hi all

I have a quick question about blocking posts in robot.txt file. If I block posts in robot.txt does that mean that google does not pick up users signatures therefore they dont get back link by posting and adding their signature with link to their site?

You mean you want to block viewtopic.php?
Nothing would get indexed then, except the topic titles in viewforum.

The file blocked in robot text is posting.php

As long as this means google can still index topics and threads and user signatures are visible to google then that fine

Thanks

posting.php is used for making a post. It has nothing to do with viewing posts.

As I already said, the answer is "No".
Blocking posting.php has nothing whatsoever to do with viewing a post and its signature.

No, because the original question was asking about blocking posts. So if you want to block posts, obviously you'd block viewtopic.php and then the answer is "yes".

No it wasnt.
I asked:

and he answered:

Therefore, he is asking if blocking posting.php via the robots.txt will block spiders from seeing links in signature. The asnswer is "No". Robots do not use posting.php to see posts.
