How can I stop Registration Bots?

Post by Fist »

There are bots being registered on my forums with pornography links in their info, I cannot ban IPs because they do not post anything

I need an easy way to stop bot Registration on my forums that WORKS

I've tried many pictures and such, but none of them have worked yet, can someone direct me to a working one?

Thanks

The base download comes with a Visual Confirmatin MOD. Installing that, along with either user or admin activation should stop most of those. It is found in the contrib folder.

I don't see any such modification in any of my files

It will be located in the original download. I'm not sure if it is in the upgrade packages. The file is visual_confirmation.zip in the /contrib folder.

These bots are bypassing all of the user name ban controls and e-mail ban controls. They appear in the member list without being activated either....

I have updated with all the latest security updates but this problem still persists

There are few ways to prevent this also, NativeMind. What I did (although I hadn't yet had the problem) was to make is that only activated users show up in the newest members section and in the member list. That way the incentive is taken away from people like that. Group those changes with user or admin activation and their names/links won't show up.

This post has a method to keep the newest user at the bottom of the board from showing inactive users. This post will keep the memberlist from showing inactive users unless the person viewing it is an admin. The post right below that shows how to make the number of registered users reflect only active users. I coded all those into my board and they work fine.

So if bots register at your board they will not be seen by the general user populace if you also have either user or admin activation. You, as admin, will still be able to go into the member list and see if any bots have signed up and therefore you can go in and delete them. If you have a large number of those I would suggest the Admin User List MOD.
