2 forums read from same database?

Post by rossmcclymont »

Is it possible for 2 forums to read and write onto the same database?

Only one will be getting used at any one time (on different hosts and hence domains) so there won't be any clashes, it's just I've got a new host and it's down at the moment, so I resorted to my current host but had to stick with what I had on that database.

See, the new one has more bandwidth (but is the one that's down now) so I can't just link back to the other one because then that would use up that one's bandwidth - which I don't want (unless the new one is down...).

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks,
Ross

yes. presuming you use different table prefixes when installing. this will slightly affect performance though.

I thought that makes it like 2 different databases merged into one - like for having 2 different forums with different posts and members?

ths Kb Article linked to will merge two dbs and will allow them to share data. from what I understand you want data kept seperate but because of constraints you only have one db. Use a different prefix (i.e. phpBB_, and phpBB2_) when installing.

Sorry, I probably wasn't too clear in my first post.

I want both forums (on seperate domains) to see the same data and both be able to write on the database and the stuff that's added to the database will also be seen by both forums.

Is this possible?

yes as per above post. If they are on seperate domains and therefore on seperate server you will need to specify the exact DSN rather than simply using localhost. If they share a server, see above ^^.

cheers!
