Re: Minimalistic template?

It's in the devs corner, just wanted to say something about it.

IMO something like this should be out asap. If it's possible before phpbb2 beta2/RC/final.

Why?
IMO there should be AS many AS possible templates for phpbb2 final ready when phpbb2 final will be released. It's just like a game console :). If there are no games out at the release it won't sell, if there are many it's the best seller of the year.

just a note :) of course it's not as dramatic as it is with game consoles but this would be a good argument for users to choose phpBB2 :)

Correct.. But it's a trade of between ease of use for template designers and development time for us.

A lot of the current changes are small (interface related) changes. If we have 2 templates that we HAVE to keep up to date it will slowdown development...

So for us (developers) it's best to hold this of as long as possible. Furthermore you CAN create templates and as Tom said, it's won't get that much easier if there is a barebones template..

if we knew how to create templates don't you think there would be a lot more templates available to choose from, comprende?

that's true, IMO a full list of available vars (where (file.php) and which) is that what designers would need and it would save you time :)
and AFAIK there will be such a documentation with the final so you needn't create it then :)

just my thoughts (but i am no designer)

imho the pso template looks minimalistic to me.

I have to agree with devoutus. I think the PSO template is a good template that clearly shows how to use the template variables.

It's not nearly as complex as subSilver and dosan't make use of CSS quite as much. I'm not sure what Pauls plans for its future are though (I know he wants to rename it..heh)

I'd really like to see the PSO template finished with the final (or even beta2). Many of my users like subSilver, but they find it a bit heavy with all the gradients, buttons, etc. So is there any chance PSO will be worked on?

Also, I saw a post, where Tom says he could make a lighter theme, if he has the time. I really hope he does:)

Just throwing my vote in for the inclusion of the PSO theme, if that's still a possibility.

I'm finishing off/fixing the PSO template. :D Should be ready very soon, as most of the problems are simply changes in variable names, and new files required. Would help if people could post a list of problems they have experienced with it. ;)

I was going to work on creating a low-bandwidth template a while ago...but I ran into problems, to be more specific the template system was not advanced enough to let you replace the user info buttons(homepage, aol im, profile, blah blah blah) with text links...ie there was one template variable that printed out

Code: Select all

<a href="profile.php?arguments=blahblah"><img src="whatever_the_profile_button_image_filename_is.gif"></a>
Or something of the sort. I'm not sure if that was intended to remain permanent, if it is, then that really hinders any low-bandwidth(or 'minimalist', as it is called in this thread) template. Does anyone know if this is still true? If not then I can start production of the template again.[/code]

there are variables for that, check the subSilver tempalate in viewtopic_body,tpl (i think) and look fot the ICQ link.
