So... :)

I have a phpbb 1.4 forum and would like to upgrade to the latest version of phpbb 2.

Is this a good guess as to how I go about it?

1. Backup data for my existing forums - :p
2. Rename my existing phpbb dir
3. extract latest phpbb from cvs to my local phpbb dir
4. Run install.php

I had a quick look and it looked as though it would upgrade my existing phpbb db - is this a correct assumption?

Thanks for all the work you lot have done - I really want to get it installed now :p

there will be an upgrade script for 1.4 -> 2.0 when the final is released.

But I'd like to use it now if possible.

Pix,
I suggest STRONGLY that you upgrade if you use the 1.4. It is not very secure and can be hacked. Mine did!!!

I've just updated from the CVS again since the initial "freeze" when the schemas were moved into the /db/schemas about this time last week and I've noticed the mysql one has had the phpbb_topics.topic_title reduced from a char(100) to char(60) at version 1.2. Is this for compatibility reasons with other DBMSes?

This doesn't seem to have effected the PM message title, where phpbb_privmsgs.privmsgs_subject is still a varchar(255).

I'd have probably missed this had not looked at some of the older posts which had some veeery long subjects (testing upgrade from phpBB1.x to phpBB2 at the mo).

No, no compatibility issues, mainly it's a preventative measure ...

Wouldn't that impact on boards which use unicode (eg: Chinese)? I seem to remember all the characters got changed to their respectiive HTML entities and thus took up quite a lot of space, being of the format (off the top of my head without checking.....) &#hhhh;

So long as the character encoding is set correctly there will be no problem ... that's the theory anyway :D Besides, it's a simple task to modify the field length if absolutely essential.

Yup. Seems reasonable enough.

Looking at the CVS schema for MySQL, the table phpbb_themes_name has a themes_id of smallint( 5 ), where every other _id is now mediumint( 8 ), including the same value in phpbb_themes.

Similar item in phpbb_forums, where forum_id is now a smallint( 8 ), where it appears it should be mediumint( 8 ).

Hope that's useful info.

PhpBB,

It would be nice if you could release a new beta/test version that include the freezed db.

A new version, as noted in the phpBB 2.0 status thread will be forthcoming but is still a small ways off yet.

I might be wrong but I believe text sets like Chinese are double byte characters so they will end up using double the number of characters at bare minimum. As I'm not chinese myself I can't confirm this 100% but I have worked with Asian character sets in html (under the correct character set) and it is more complex.

Anyone able to confirm/slap-me on this :)
