I new to PHP and databases. Would it be OK to have phpBB2 and Wordpress using the same mySQL database as long as the prefixes where different? I.e., if my phpBB where to use the prefix phpBB_ and Wordpress use a different prefix?

absolutely, no probem at all, just give whatever program you want to use the database, a different table prefix and you are set.

I have my hosting with Godaddy. I asked them and they said it would screw things up. They said I would need to upgrade to get more databases or use blog software that didn't use a database. I'm new to mySQL and databases all together, but my intuition told me it should work fine that way.

Does the backup feature in phpBB only backup those items with the phpBB_ prefix?

As far as I know, the phpBB backup feature only backs up the default tables. However, you can tell it to back up additional tables by listing the tables with a comma between tables.

Salty78 is right.

Yep. My blog uses the same DB has my forum and portal do. It may or may not be efficient, but it works perfectly well.

to start with godaddy doesn't have a clue when it comes to hosting, their business is domain registration and they should have stayed there.

also, they most likely just want you to upgrade to a more expensive package.

just make a backup from your admin panel, if you don't have any MODs installed, that will backup everything, do a full backup. then go ahead and install the blog, using the same database but a different table prefix and you will be fine.

by the way, there is a blog MOD for phpbb, a couple of them, check out phpbbhacks.com for them.

Yeah, I figured the tech I talked to either didn't know what they were talking about, or was just trying to trick me into upgrading. Everythings been working fine.

As far as backup, I was wondering how I would go about backing up, say, just my blog. Without downloading the entire database.
