Robot posts in guest allowed forum

Post by Hynee »

We've disabled guest posting, because the content is unacceptable. All I want to know is if people have seen this form of post before, is it a current issue that is flaring, or is it something that comes around every now and again.

The form is (nothing explicit here!):

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Poster: Patricia b
Guest

Post subject: I took off my skirt, blouse, b

[crude sentence] [computer jargon].

eg,
[crude sentence] Mailbox_date_trimmer. [crude sentence] Mmsensitivity. [crude sentence] 1st Cd To Mp3 Maker. [crude sentence] At T Global Dialer. [crude sentence] 1st Mail Sender.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

We like to allow guest to post in some forums, but this robot has made it impossible. It seems like it uses Markoff Chains (I think they're called that), but I don't know.

D'oh, one of the other admins got to it and deleted it, I'm not sure if he got the IP. I guess that's the obvious solution, except we've had some in the past that came from multiple IP addresses.

There is a visual confirmation mod for guest posting. I think it makes a guest type in a code every time they want to post. That prevents robotic spam scripts from making posts like that and still allows you to have guest access. :)

I Found it.

Many thanks, I'll test it and see how it goes.

How has that visual confirmation mod worked for you?

I have the same problem:

BTW, phpBB already has a visual confirmation system, so can it be set for guest posting by changing any settings without installing a mod?

Yep, I've got the "Guest Confirmation" mod installed now, and it works, and we'll probably open up more forums to guest posting, and hope it is effective.

Just to reiterate, the Visual Confirmation for Guests mod is at:

That Guest Confirmation mod is actually reusing phpBB visual confirmation module. So the mod itself didn't have the full blown visual confirmation, just pointing to the right direction within phpBB. Because of that, you need to have visual confirmation ready before able to use the guest mod.
