I was hacked, what should I look for?

Post by Shantra » Tue May 24, 2005 7:48 pm

I was hacked, and I know I should have upgraded to the latest version (I had 2.0.11)...

Most of the forum looks normal but something has changed: my administrator name had changed from large letters (AA) to small (aa), some forum descriptions had been deleted and some members had reported strange emails.

Is there anything else I should look for? And yes, I have upgraded to the lates version. Thanks!

I know that my forum was being prepped for a hacking/mass email or something....

There were files inside my directory named Makefile, and there was a photo.php file, that if used had a bunch of code and crap on it.. I don't know what it was for, really.. But it definitely wasn't put there when I installed phpbb.

As far as upgrading to the latest version, I have the vxxx14 right now, and today my main page was over written with a message:
AnTU_Raya D3F4C3D this site Great n Greetz to StOnEdJoKEr and SetanCruz Dalnet

The forum itself was untouched...

I like being hacked into.. I really do.

Inside my phpbb directory was a file called sampan.txt, sampan.1, and sampan.2, and the text file looked like this:

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/perl

This is getting pretty aggravating... I think my site is on a hitlist or something... this is the fifth time it's been hacked into in the last two years.

ABSOLUTELY NO support via PM/IM/email or I'll get a cow to sit on you

And of course, after updating to the 2.xx.15, I can no longer log in.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: phpbb_clean_username() in /www/c/crawdaddy79/htdocs/phpbb/login.php on line 57

EDIT:

I can log in.. after deleting the entire directory and starting over from scratch.

Wow, looks bad! I also had a login problem after the update, but I solved it with updating the database.

I just found these strange files:

admin_board.php.orig
admin_board.php.rej
viewtopic.php.c20050410
viewtopic.php.orig
viewtopic.php.rej
viewtopic.php.sav
bbcode.php.orig_bbcode
usercp_register.php.orig

...and deleted them from my online forum.
I think I was lucky since nothing happened to my posts.

Do you think someone has gotten my members email addresses?

There were files inside my directory named Makefile

I have discovered this "Makefile" in my directory, too. Is it a precursor to being hacked as Crawdaddy79 states or is it a normal part of phpBB operation.

Also found config.php.orig
