Cannot Connect to Database Problem

Post by thejator » Sun Nov 13, 2005 3:22 am

I copied the phpBB2 folder piece by piece to my ftp site, however when I run the install it gives me the error "Cannot Connect to Database". I am a complete novice when it comes to installing the forums and the instructions do not make much sense to me. Can anyone help me?

You are entering the wrong info on the install page. Double check all the database info with your host.

You need to look in your hosting control panel or contact your host and get the info requested on the install page.

There should be a username and password also,

You need these in order for the installation to work

Ok so I created a database and a username and password, and tried it, but received same error. So I switched it from My SQL 3.x to MySQL 4.x and got this error now..

I had the same problem recently, when I switched hosts, and just FTP'ed everything across. It didnt work.....

I then realised that I also needed to restore the database, via the
General Admin
- Restore Database
options.

I also ensured that I used the same username and password for the new database area, that I had to create, as the original setup. It all worked in the end.

My problem was that I didn't know what I was doing :D

cs113285_forum is your database name not server name. Try localhost for the server name.

mySQL is probably 4, not many install of 3 left. The Database Server Hostname is a guess on my part, but pretty standard.

Your config file is un-writeable at present. A copy of the config file will be downloaded to your computer when you click the button below. You should upload this file to the same directory as phpBB 2. Once this is done you should log in using the administrator name and password you provided on the previous form and visit the admin control center (a link will appear at the bottom of each screen once logged in) to check the general configuration. Thank you for choosing phpBB 2.

Since FTP extensions are enabled in this version of PHP you may also be given the option of first trying to automatically FTP the config file into place.

So if I click the option for them to put it in for me, it wants my
FTP path to phpBB 2
FTP Username
FTP password

Or I can do it manually, but where do I put it. And ocne I put it there, how do I start setting up my forum.
