Defacing / Updating phpBBB

Post by shrimpcreole »

It's been a great day. Hackers gained access to my host via my phpBB and defaced all my sites.

.... o.k., here's the question ... I haven't updated the code, well, never and I'm using a 2004 version. I need to install an update to patch the hole, but I do not want to lose several years of history. Can someone help????

Here are all hte code changes to PHP in each version. Start with the version you are at and work your way through.

Doing this shouldn't destroy anything, but make sure you get a backup of all your files first.

I'm going to have to hire help to replace 3 years of code. Is there a way I can replace the current phpBB directory with the new improved version, then insert the history???

Thank you for your help!

Do you have any MODS? If not, then it's simple. Install a new PHPBB 2.0.20 and restore your database backup after that. Then run install/update_to_latest.php and you are ready.
When I suggest that you should alter your files, BACKUP them BEFORE.

Thanks Stefan! Now I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. No, I do not have any mods!!! But, can you elaborate a little more? Where is the database located??? And, how do I run install/lupdate_to_latest.php? Is that a zip directory?

1. Download your forum folder and a backup of your database to your hard disk and make sure that you got everything.

2. Download PHPBB 2.0.20 here (full package) and un-zip it on your hard disk.

3. Delete all old files on your server.

4. Upload all new files to your server except the /contrib/ and /docs/ folders.

5. Upload your old config.php (overwrite) to the server.

6. Run http://{your domain name here}/{your forum folder here}/install/update_to_latest.php in your browser.

7. Delete your /install/ folder.

8. You are done.
When I suggest that you should alter your files, BACKUP them BEFORE.
