Error 500 usually means the server is overloaded.

Dear Hounter,

Thank you for contacting customer support.

There does not appear to be any problems with the hosting account. Unfortunately we cannot assist you with your third-party phpBB program. You will need to contact the manufacturer of that client for any technical assistance. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

Regards,

Gary P.

I cant see the error text in the image you uploaded.

Did you check you error logs for the exact error message and can you post it again?

Edit...also check your permissions

Your host has, most probably, installed "mod_security", and they have rules in place that are incompatible with words you and your users use in the forum. For example, the wrong rules set will give an ISE500 error if the word "cat" appears in a message, or "system", because they're "bad things", in certain circumstances. Have them review their mod_security logs.

Since they have the server logs, though, they're the ONLY ones who can fix an ISE500 error.

Whether or not you installed your forum isn't relevant - it's who installed the web server itself and has control of its settings that matters.

"mod_security" is a module for the Apache web server that monitors requests, applying "rules" to decide whether or not to pass those requests on to Apache to be processed. When the rules are wrong, they will cause (depending upon the mod_security settings) either a 406, 403, or ISE500 error. It will log what it did and why, and those are the logs you (or whoever controls its configuration) need to look at.

mod_security is among the top 3 things that cause "forbidden" and ISE500 errors right now, if not THE number 1 entry in the list. It is "sudden", because most people have no idea their hosts put it in. It doesn't always cause a problem, but does so for relatively common words (like "cat" and "system") when it does, and almost always it's happening when you're trying to post or edit a message, or enter the admin section of the forum.

Godaddy does run mod_security on their Linux servers, and their Windows servers have other things that make the incompatible with PHPBB. You're still not past their first-level tech support people if they're telling you they aren't.

Of course, they also have decided that they want nothing to do with PHPBB, so they do their best to discourage people from installing it. And the first-level tech support people won't have access to the information needed to fix things, in any case. You need to get them to "escalate" you to someone who can at least examine the server error logs to determine what is causing the ISE 500 error, or it can not be fixed.

Ok, I'm having this same problem now.
Only happens when a user is using IE 6 or Firefox and probably anything other than IE 7 beta.
Only happens when a user replys to a topic for the first time. After that it seems fine.

Any ideas? Also hosted on Linux Godaddy server 100GB space 1TB bandwidth.

I replied to topics with a test account in firefox and typed test and tst after the first reply i was able to reply right after with the same text.
