What is forum pruning?

I searched the boards and google, couldnt find anything significant, so somebody please tell me what forum pruning is.

taken from the userguide
Pruning is typically done to remove old unneeded posts and to save space. If you like, you can set a forum to prune itself automatically. For more information,

so it deletes them? wont that hurt that number of topics and posts overall?

phpBB's pruning system, if I understand it correctly, deletes posts in the process of pruning, but does not decrement post-count/topic-count statistics.

Its does however effect the board total posts which are displayed on the index by the the who is online box
