forum removing www. in address

Post by pteam »

If any1 can help here:

When you goto http://www.j-simpson.org then click on forums it removes the www and just goes to http://j-simpson.org/forums no matter how I link to it if I just link to /forums or if I link to the whole url with www. It has to be phpbb removing the www. for some reason there is no mods on there right now, as I have just reinstalled it. Although I plan to add Seo urls by mgutt back on once I get this corrected. Anybody have any ideas?

Thank you in advanace!

I think if you go into the admin panel, and configuration, you forgot to add the www in the correct field.

Thank you guys very much. One more quick questions should I in the domain name field put http://www.j-simpson.org , www.j-simpson.org , http://www.j-simpson.org/forums , or www.j-simpson.org/forums . Basically should there be a http and www. or just www. and should I list the /forums after?

Thank you in advance!

Ok in reply to my post above I put http://www.j-simpson.org in the field and it auto changes it to just www.j-simpson.org without the http:// . The /forums comes in the field below that.

However, when I goto the main page of j-simpson.org and click on forums (in my status bar it says http://www.j-simpson.org ) it still removes the www. when you goto the forum, have I done this correctly , is there a time delay, etc?

I dunno. I clicked your link without the www on it, and it put the www back on when I clicked anything on your menu.

Oh I see.... When I went to your index, it took the www off, but any of the menu items put it back on.

Yes at first it didnt have the www. in the domain config box, I have put the www. in there and saved it 10 times but when you goto the main page then click on the link to forums phpbb still deletes the www. I cant figure out why.

It is a webserver thing....

If I put in: http://www.j-simpson.org/forums/index.php that is where it goes.

If I put in http://www.j-simpson.org/forums it redirects to http://j-simpson.org/forums/index.php

Oh ha. http://www.j-simpson.org/forums/ goes the right place too....

you don't , apparently your server is setup to not use the www

which is great, because it is no longer needed for urls

the www is a hold over from years ago when it was needed to tell the difference between machines. some were web servers only ( www )

some were ftp only ( ftp. ) some were email only, etc. etc.

nowdays, everthing is often on one machine, therefore, no need for the www.

it was always just an alias.

so,

your host has their server setup to not use it and to redirect any www calls back to your true domain name which is just domain.com not www.domain.com

so, forget about it, don't use it in your admin panel configuration, don't use it in any links to your board, etc.

if anyone mistakenly uses it to access your board, it will be rediredted to your true domain name anyway.

also, never put the http:// in for your domain name in the admin panel.

first it won't work, becuase the script already prepends that to all the links so you would wind up trying to go to http://http://yourdomain.com

remember, http://domain.com is not a domain name, it is a url

domain.com is a domain name.

luck,
robert

Robert,

Thank you for your reply. The only problem is , the only place it removes the www. is the forums domain, and that is the only part of the whole domain that does this. If the domain was setup to not use www. then the whole domain would be that way.

@ Robert,

you aren't the one who decides which is better.. www or not.. The search engines decide.. and of course every email programm, text editor and so on can't make automatical links of domain.com. phpbb can't, too. You need to think about all users.. most of them don't know the "http://" thing, so they would share links without "http://" and "www" and maybe you miss some important backlinks.

Next is, that search engines decide which is the "better" one.. they decide themself mostly for the "www"-variant, because most of the other users used it, too. And if you redirect from "www" to "not www" the search engine stops crawling or reduces crawling. I've tested it with many customers. Every one of them has much better results as he used the one the search engines prefered (some of them had "not www", but <5% of all).

regards

I think if you do some research, you will find that what I said is true.

also, the search engines don't care if it is using the www or not.

the just care what is on the page.

the only time it matters to search engines is if the web server is set up to show one thing for a url with the www in it and something else for the url without it.

servers with this type of setup are rare these days, but they do occur.

like I said the www was always just an alias pointing to the correct server/directory anyway.
