Database sizes

Post by Boby Dimitrov » Sat Jan 05, 2002 11:15 pm

Please all of you, who run a phpBB2 RC-* or CVS with at least 100 users and 5000 posts on mySQL post database size here. I'd like to make some comparisions. Also, if any of the devs can come up with an algoritm for calculating the approximate db size, it'll be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, I have a DB running current CVS with double the number of users and double the posts.... weighing it at about 7.1MB.

Code: Select all

 Table Records Type Size
   phpbb_auth_access 40 MyISAM 3.7 KB
   phpbb_banlist 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_categories 3 MyISAM 3.1 KB
   phpbb_config 51 MyISAM 4.4 KB
   phpbb_disallow 4 MyISAM 2.1 KB
   phpbb_forum_prune 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_forums 10 MyISAM 6.7 KB
   phpbb_groups 191 MyISAM 11.4 KB
   phpbb_posts 10,861 MyISAM 759.4 KB
   phpbb_posts_text 10,861 MyISAM 2.3 MB
   phpbb_privmsgs 527 MyISAM 60.8 KB
   phpbb_privmsgs_text 527 MyISAM 155.0 KB
   phpbb_ranks 33 MyISAM 3.4 KB
   phpbb_search_results 1 MyISAM 3.2 KB
   phpbb_search_wordlist 16,713 MyISAM 659.9 KB
   phpbb_search_wordmatch 213,665 MyISAM 3.3 MB
   phpbb_sessions 1 HEAP 368.8 KB
   phpbb_smilies 49 MyISAM 3.4 KB
   phpbb_themes 6 MyISAM 3.4 KB
   phpbb_themes_name 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_topics 1,014 MyISAM 124.1 KB
   phpbb_topics_watch 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_user_group 231 MyISAM 8.8 KB
   phpbb_users 188 MyISAM 44.3 KB
   phpbb_vote_desc 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_vote_results 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_vote_voters 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
   phpbb_words 0 MyISAM 1.0 KB
  28 table(s) Sum 254,976 -- 7.8 MB
So a guesstimate... your DB will be about 3-4MB.

Right now with 20045 posts and 3210 users this board is 19MB, keep in mind we've got some big posts here related to hacks et all. Most boards I suspect will have posts of generally a lesser size :) We've also got more than the average size word table (what with foreign chars and the like).

Well, the trend seems to be that DB size is pretty independant on number of users (unsuprisingly) but very tied to the number of posts.

A crude way of judging DB size would be post_count * 750. This will be the DB size in bytes.....

Looking at that, there is a vB 2.0 DB that I was looking at migrating to phpBB2.0 which will take up some 400MB!! That's what you get for 4k users and just under half a million posts... :o

So, according to this formula, the DB size for this forum should be about 14.7 mb... close enough. Anyway, it's much less that I though it would be. Thanks!

Number of posts: 37542
Number of topics: 5133
Number of userss: 1767

DBase size: 17.78 MB

DBase size all depends if it's an upgraded board or if it was installed as phpBB2 since the search tables are not populated during the upgrade

Well, upgrades done with more recent upgrade scripts will have the search tables populated automagically anyway.

Plus the search index should have been populated manually with the dev scripts if they were empty..... search doesn't work at all otherwise.

It doubles the size?! Damn, this thing is dangerous, especially for boars with db size limits...
