Have you run install.php rather than update_to_latest.php?

Sounds like you have deleted your config.php file. Have you got a backup of it?

It is! It's PHP!

Just follow the steps and add the relevant info. You can get your username/password/database type from your host or using cPanel or whatever is supplied. The prefix will be viewable with phpmyadmin (or similar tool) - it's not too hard - honest!

ok but now i get this
Your config file is un-writeable at present. A copy of the config file will be downloaded to your computer when you click the button below. You should upload this file to the same directory as phpBB 2. Once this is done you should log in using the administrator name and password you provided on the previous form and visit the admin control center (a link will appear at the bottom of each screen once logged in) to check the general configuration. Thank you for choosing phpBB 2.

Since FTP extensions are enabled in this version of PHP you may also be given the option of first trying to automatically FTP the config file into place.
wat do i do with that? it gives me two options
1 attempt to FTP config file into place
2 Just send the file to me and I'll FTP it manually
Once you have downloaded your config file to your local machine you may'Continue Upgrade' button below to move forward with the upgrade process. Please wait to upload the config file until the upgrade process is complete.

Rebuild config.php
Complete this replacing the xxx with your details.

Code: Select all

<?php

// phpBB 2.x auto-generated config file
// Do not change anything in this file!

$dbms = 'mysql'; //your database type

$dbhost = 'localhost'; //usually but not always "localhost"
$dbname = 'xxxxxxx'; //your database name (case sensitive)
$dbuser = 'xxxxxxxx'; // the username that has access to the above database (case sensitive)
$dbpasswd = 'xxxxxxxx'; // the database password (case sensitive)

$table_prefix = 'phpbb_'; //tables prefix - can be left at this but change if you want

define('PHPBB_INSTALLED', true);

?>
That will give you a new config.php. Put your old database connection details in it.
ftp that to the root of your webspace and run the file install/update_to_latest.php with your browser.
Then delete the install and contrib directories.

That's telling you the database is already installed. You either need to delete the database to start again (probably in your sites cpanel>databases> phpmyadmin section) or you just make a text file called config.php and fill in the information like it says in the link Bobble posted.

All that file is asking you for is the database name, username and password (allof which you gave it when you filled in the installation page).

Why do you want to delete the database with all your members, posts etc?

Just follow the advice I gave about the config.php rebuild and nothing is lost.
