Permissions

I'm wondering if it is possible to set up a forum so that only certain members can gain access?

What I'm trying to do is this.

I have business owners who purchase products from me. Say one product is a CD on pricing and another is a CD on networking.

I want to be able to give those who purchase pricing, access to a place where they can discuss issues with each other and no one else can get into that place.

Same thing with networking.

How would I do that?

Set a forum permission to "private", make a usergroup for members to have access to it, and then give this usergroup permission to acess that forum.
All the required options will appear as soon as you create a private forum.

Can you please tell me where to start to do this? I.e. Admin, Admin forum, General forum, etc. etc.

Set a forum permission to "private",
"Forum Admin", "Permissions"

make a usergroup for members to have access to it,
"Group Admin", "Management"

and then give this usergroup permission to access that forum.
"Group Admin", "Permissions"

and then the unsaid step, which is to add the nominated users to your new usergroup. That is done via the "Usergroups" link above each normal page, not via the Admin Panel.

Thank you.

I am presuming that the nominated users must all be registered for me to add them? That I can't add them and then invite them.

That is correct. The username must exist before it can be added to a usergroup.
(Internally, phpBB does it all by usernumbers, not by the text name.)

I'm not sure this would work, since I want to give all 2000 of my ezine subscribers and visitors to my site permission to get into it.

I do have a private area -- that I set for people who purchased my products.

You only set some of your forums as private.
Remember, in phpBB terminology you have a BOARD, which contain CATEGORIES, which contain FORUMS, which contain TOPICS.
Permissions are managed on a FORUM basis.

Does that mean you have a solution, or still see a problem?
