If you set "Use SMTP" to "no", then phpBB uses an internal mail function. From your reports, that is not working.
It may be because your host has blocked that function, or it may be because your host requires the "From" address to be from the same domain. This "From address" comes from that "Admin Email Address" field.

If you set "Use SMTP" to "yes", then you must specify an "SMTP server address", which should be something your web host can tell you. If their SMTP server does not use authentication, then you leave the "SMTP username" and "SMTP password" fields blank.
If they do use authentication, then you need to fill those fields in with the username and password they tell you.

ok, let's try this:

set smtp to yes.

in the server box put exactly this:
smtp2.servage.net

do not put anything in the username or password box.

try it,
if it does not work,

then try this:

leave that like it is,

if you do not have an email address at your host: you@yourdomain.com

then create one.

then, put that email adress in the admin email address box in your admin panel.

try that.

If that doesn't work;

Here are some of the things I have seen cause email errors:

you must have a valid email address in the admin panel for the admin account.

any member that has any kind of "notify me" checked in their profile will have to have a valid email address listed or you will get errors.

on some server setups, you must have a "catchall/ default" email account setup on your account for sendmail to work.

ok, here's the deal. the sendmail function that phpbb uses can only work if the host has their end setup correctly and activated.

the smtp function that phpbb uses can only work if you have access to a smtp server that will let you use it.

SMTP Options:

If you have your own domain name and if you have a hosting account where your board is installed;
then, you first try leaving smtp to "no" , nothing in the boxes.
that will use the servers sendmail function via the board's php call.

if that doesn't work,
then, you try smtp by checking "yes" , put localhost in the server box and leave the others empty.
that will try to use your domain name's smtp server.

if that doesn't work,
then you put the same thing in the smtp boxes that you use in your email program to send email from your domain name email
that is trying to use your own smtp server for your domain name.

if that doesn't work,
then you try different combinations of smtp servers, localhost, username, password, etc etc.

if that doesn't work,
then, try to find a smtp server somewhere that will let you relay through their servers.
this is not likely, and if you do , it won't last very long because of abuse.

Dear Lumpy Burgertushie and Ric,
thanks so much for your help.
I have to tell - it is the most strange situation I have ever had.
Today I opened my board, and everything was ready again with the wrong automated mail system.
I do not understand.
It worked very well at the first two monthes after I installed my board.
Than was wrong for more than two weeks. No reason why it was bad. (??)
And now it is ready again.
But I did not do anything to correct it.
I tried to do what you proposed to me, but there was no any reaction.
And than from one day to the other everything is OK again.
It is strange!
But...
I am happy it is working again.
Thanks you tried to help.
I wish you all the best,
Adrina
