Avatars not working?

Post by chicagotransam » Sat Oct 13, 2007 7:30 am

Did a quick search and didn't come up with much. I have set my avatars to 150X150, at a max of 30k. However, even though my avatar uploads ok, it doesn't display in my profile or on the forums. Is this a problem with the template or ....?

My page is at http://www.therealpatriot.net/cgi/forum

My user name there is ChicagoTransAm.... Thanks much!

I just get this error if I go to that address:

Code: Select all

Reserved directory not allowed [/cgi/forums/]

Don't put ur forum in the CGI-bin, I'm guessing thats what you did, just upload it into the main root directory, if u want it to be in a folder create a directory, and then uplad the forum in there, but dont put it in the cgi-bin.

Having it in the CGI directory will cause lots of problems.

If your host makes you put it there, best to find a new host. Also, images will not be called correctly from a CGI folder.

That stinks... so there is no work around other than paying out more cashish to change hosts? :(

There are many free and/or very cheap hosts around.

Try looking at http://www.webhostingtalk.com where they discuss hosts

Does your host make you put it there, or recommend it?
Hosts often give bad advice, and you have to experiment yourself.

When I put it in the root folder, and go to the site, it simply is a "list" of the files for the forum

You may either use a .htaccess file to make it re-direct to index.php, or you may do it with an HTML file (the easier option of the two).

For the latter, simply create a file called "index.html" and put in the following line.

Code: Select all

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=/forum/index.php">

OK... so I put a file called "Forum.html" with the code you suggested. However, it doesn't make any difference as far as the avatars :(

I'm sorry, I didn't notice at first that you also have a main website.

What you would probably want to do is simply upload all the forum files to the root directory (not within a directory such as /forum/) and then simply link to the forum from your main page with the following link.

Code: Select all

http://therealpatriot.net/index.php
I apologize again for my absent-mindedness.

I appreciate the help but unfortunately, when I move the forum to the root folder and then use the index.html file supplied, it comes up with the error "PHP is not supported on this host"

So is there no way to make it work "IN" the CGI folder?

Using it in the CGI folder would cause several problems, as previous posters have stated. I would definitely look at the possibility of changing hosts. As it has been stated, there are many cheap hosts out there that are probably a bit better than the one you are using now.

If that is not an option, perhaps talk to your host about it, and tell him that you simply cannot use your forum in the CGI folder.
