Hi everyone

I am currently running phpBB2 v 2.0.23 with the Saphir skin

I have recently encountered a problem on the cms system I have integrated phpBB2 with and whilst rectifying these problems I have found 2 files on the server which I dont recall seeing before. The files in question are .viminfo and .bash_history.

Does anyone know what these files are used for?

Are these files related to phpBB2?

Thanks
Athlon

Neither of those files are related to phpBB.
I would guess .bash_history is keeping a log of commands entered at the bash command line, which is something specific to your web server.

Both files are there because your "home" directory on the server is the same as your web directory. This means you actually have command line access (via SSH, using tools like puTTY) to the server, which could help later, but most people don't want to learn the specifics of how to take advantage of that.

Thanks for the info on this one.

One thing re command line access via putty, does this pose a possible security problem? (does it make it easier for hackers to get in?)

nope, it is part of most servers out there. all of my servers are setup this way.

if you are really curious, ask your host. they are the ones that know how the server is set up , etc.

Access via puTTY is far more secure than FTP access - if your FTP client supports "sftp", you should try using it. This is because SSH (and sftp) are encrypted, while regular FTP is not.
