Ikonboard 3.x Converter

Post by vHiker » Sat May 25, 2002 1:34 am

I've written a IB3 -> phpBB2 converter in vbscript. Windows users are in luck. I'm not sure about mac users but hey, worst case just go over to a friend's house and run it on their pc. Basically you make a tar backup of your IB3 database, download it to your pc & unzip the tar backup, run the vbscript, and then upload the converted output into your SQL database. Read the instructions at the top of the script for more specifics.

Download the latest version => http://www.tomdav.com/825/converter.zip

If you are unable to make a tar backup of your IB3 database AND your database is mySQL, please contact me via PM if you would like to test a tool that will create a backup from your mySQL database.

NOTE: If you previously ran the converter and are having problems searching your forums (more specifically, topic titles), download the zip file above, extract the file "rebuild_search_tables.php", upload it to the folder phpbb is installed in, and then run this php script to rebuild the search tables.

Please note that many of the user comments in this topic are no longer applicable. If you are having problems, I recommend reviewing the converter instructions.

Yes, it converts Ikonboard 3.0 RC 2, 3.0 RC 3, 3.0.x, 3.1.0, and 3.1.1 :D

Hi, thanks for this work.

I run the script above, it runs for a while then comes back with the following message:

Line: 612
Char: 53
Error: Invalid procedure call or arguement: 'Mid'
Code: 800A0005

Is that me or an error with the script?

Thanks for this great work!

i had no problems running the script.

perhaps a problem with the extracted data from the tar-file? i sometimes had problems with tar-files in the past. if you are using winzip: altering the "tar file smart cr/lf conversion" setting might help (options - configuration - misc)

Thanks I'll try your suggestion, if not its a pity I can't download the original version 1 again and see if that one worked for me.

Thanks for the help, I tried it with the one above, I'll download it again and try again.

It is an upgrade from IB2.1.9 but none of the original posts there will be there as the board is pruned back to 30 days, and I upgraded when IB3 was in an early stage.

Update: Tried it again got this message:

Script: ib3-phpbb2.vbs
Line: 611
Char: 53
Error: Invalid procedure call or arguement: 'Mid'
Code: 800A0005
Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error.

Update: Just tried the 1.2 version - same error message. To be honest if I lose the odd emoticon it won't bother me, is there any way you can suggest that I can sort of by-pass that bit so that the posts and members are transferred over?

magicpatch01, after taking a look at your tar backup, there were some old IB2 style quotes in posts that were creating problems. I've updated the script to handle these properly. There was also some corrupt data in the time zone offset field (probably due to your IB2->IB3 conversion as well). Finally, there was more corrupt data in your members data (character zeros) that manifested a very nasty microsoft bug when it hit those characters. Anyway, download the latest version and you should be good to go.

Can we get some reviews on this script... Has anyone converted a fairly large ikonboard to phpbb with success? I have about 20,000 posts and 500 members. Just want to make sure the script is pretty safe before converting.

Thanks... :)

Thinking of moving from ikonboard too!

I use ikonboard for my forum, but I am getting annoyed with it - i keep trying to change things and a lot of the time no one knows how. It is very good, but I dont like certain options on it. And the admin options are almost too extensive! Easy to get lost! Therefore I would like to try phpbb but want to know the converter works first! Heres my url to the board:

I made a few changes today to speed things up and dump additional warning messages. I also corrected a few things so I recommend downloading the latest version (2.0) and re-running the script.

CigarMan, the converter is pretty solid at this point IMO. I've sucessfully converted my forum with 6500 posts and 130 members without any issues so far. magicpatch01 had 1400+ members and 15000+ posts. You may want to ask him how things worked out but size really isn't an issue - the conversion algorithm is the same regardless of the number of members and/or posts.

manzarek, just download the converter and read the instructions at the top of the file.

Hi, yes this has worked very well indeed.
Just one question though, I am testing it out on my computer, WinXP IIS, before going live on my server.
No matter who I try to log in I get the message:

"You have specified an incorrect or inactive username or an invalid password"

Have I done something wrong or not done something that I should have done?

Many Thanks!

Update: Sorry, I've just remembered, do people need to re-request their password and then they can log in? Just I don't think I can do that with it installed on my computer as I don't have a mail-server installed!

I want to convert to phpBB and I would like to use a ocnverter for my forum, but I would prefer the passwords not to be reset. Vhiker do you think this is possible?
