Categories shouldn't have forum_ids. You don't need to change cat_ids (they don't need to match IF)
Need a conversion from another forum, but they won't give you the database? Try a crawler converter. If your converter isn't listed, feel free to post in that thread to ask for one.

All right. How do I get rid of the category forum IDs? I tried to just delete all of their forum_ids but after the first one, the others came back with errors saying a forum with the ID "0" already existed.

Also, would the ID changes appear when I roll my mouse over the forums?

At this point, I am utterly confused. Send me a dump of your forums and categories tables :P

Why are categories even in the forums table in phpBB2?

No clue! I made sure to select "category" in the drop-down menu when creating a category, but for some reason, it's given a forum ID and is put into the forum table. Not really sure why =/

If you have phpMyAdmin, use it to "import" these SQL files. If you have ssh access, you can try to use
mysql -u <username> -p < <filename>

Hmm. All right. Think I found the problem.

I downloaded this mod that allows me to create subforums on phpBB2 and that gives the categories forum IDs. Is there any other way I can create subforums without downloading this mod?

Can you convert forums into subforums after conversion? You can start by making several forums to hold the converted topics and posts, then just move those forums post-conversion.

Would anybody be interested in helping me convert my Proboards forum over to a phpBB? I'm completely lost and I'm not sure where to start. I need help finding a free host as well...

Here is my proboards site: http://www.coaster101.proboards66.com/index.cgi?

Hmm, with the size of your board, a free host might not be the best idea. I don't know who might be able to help with hosting, though, but I can help with the conversion.

First step would be to download and extract the converters. Then, you should consult the Instructions.txt file in the Proboards folder. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
