I've just moved your post to the " [2.0.x] Convertors" forum.
If you look around in here, I'm sure you will find the appropriate convertor.

Not my area, but you might like to give the SMF 1.1.1 convertor a try. It's the second last topic on this page.

The SMF 1.1.1 convertor to phpBB2 will work with SMF 1.1.4.

Have you considered converting to phpBB3? It is a much more powerful forum than phpBB2.

You can install phpBB3 on the server you have now, providing the host meets the minimum requirements for hosting phpBB3. Most hosts do meet the requirements, so I doubt you will have a problem. When installing phpBB3, phpbB3 will check that the host meets the requirements and will let you know which requirements are met and which are not.

You need to upload those three files maintaining the directory structure that is in the zip file. In other words,
install/convertors/functions_smf11.php
install/convertors/convert_smf11.php
includes/auth/auth_smf.php

The auth_smf.php file allows you to log in to phpBB3 with your SMF Real Name. You won't be able to log in to phpBB3 with your SMF login name.

You have to install phpBB3 first.
Upload the phpBB3 files to the same server as SMF, but in a different folder.
Upload the three SMF convertor files to where I told you.
Using your browser, browse to the phpBB3 folder.
The install will start automatically.
Follow the instructions.
You will be asked for database information. You can use your SMF database.
When the installation is done, There will be a convert tab at the top of the page.
Click the convert tab.
There will be two convertors listed, the phpBB convertor and the SMF convertor.
Choose the SMF convertor.
Follow the instructions to finish the conversion.
You are done.

What said it couldn't copy the files?
What are you using to transfer the files?
