Announcing Titania, the Customisation Database

Post by EXreaction » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:22 am

The phpBB Customisation Database Team is proud to announce that the first phase of the Customisation Database, codenamed Titania, has been completed.

What is the Customisation Database?

The Customisation Database is the replacement for the Modification and Style database previously in use on phpBB.com and also a replacement for the numerous other custom systems on International Support Team websites.

How will this affect me?

The Customisation Database allows you to easily manage your customisations, access the latest information regarding other customisations, easily provide and receive support for any contribution you wish and, ultimately, make the customisation process simpler and more effective than ever before.

For the user
Support for contributions can now be obtained on the same page from where you downloaded the contribution. To make the support process faster and easier, you can check the “FAQ” tab to see if your question was already answered. If unanswered, new topics can be created in the “Support/Discussion” tab allowing for more effective and individualised support than ever before. You have access to screenshots, for a quick glance of what the contribution looks like in action, as well as access to previous versions of the contribution to compare them for any reason, such as an update error or compatibility conflict with the latest version of the contribution.

For the author
The Customisation Database allows you to submit, manage and support your Customisations with greater ease than ever before. After a contribution is created, you are able to submit new revisions, upload screenshots, and support your contributions all in one easily accessible area. One of the new features is the “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) area and the “Support/Discussion” area dedicated for each of your contributions. In the “FAQ” area you are able to write articles for your contribution to address common inquiries, such as known bugs, and add notes for usage and installation. In the “Support/Discussion” area you have a full forum dedicated to giving support and discussing your contribution with your users, making the task of answering questions for your contribution much easier, faster, and more orderly than before.

The when and where

After reading through this you may start to feel excited about just what this system will do for you and for that we have some good news! The Customisation Database is already live and has permanently replaced our previous Modification and Style database on phpBB.com!

All contributions and information from the previous Modification and Style database has been converted over, so there is nothing for you to do but jump right in! You will find the new Customisation Database here.

But wait, there's more!

The Customisation Database is still a work-in-progress. In the near future you will see new, additional features to assist authors and users in making the customisation process easier than before. Some of these features may be announced, but some may not be, so don't be too surprised if you see some brand new and wonderful feature you've never seen previously.

Bugs

As with any project, especially one this large, there are bound to be issues that we've missed during our pre-release testing of the Customisation Database. If you do find any bugs, please report them to the Titania bug tracker.

Special Thanks

To the Customisation Database Team for all of the hard work and time spent on this project. Your perseverance has paid off.

As an amendment to the above announcement:

Since the new Customisations Database has its own support areas for each contribution, both the Styles and MOD Database Release forums will be set to "Read-Only" and a link to the applicable support area added to each release topic.

We have set a target date for the completion of these actions of Friday, May 7th, 2010 at some point of the day.

Currently any contributions that are approved, be them Styles or Modifications, have their release topics locked. Support for those customisations will need to be requested through the customisation's support area via the link that can be found in each topic.

Thank you.

This announced change has now been completed. Any further MOD or Style support needs to be continued and/or obtained through the Customisations Database.

Thank you all for your bug reports and suggestions. Keep them coming. :)

An additional update will be done to the two release forums to add the MOD/Style support link for each contribution to the topic as well as update the descriptions and links.
