In the past, we have always made the community aware of the technologies being employed to power the phpBB project. In keeping with that tradition, I would like to take a moment to describe some recent
improvements to the stability and speed of www.phpBB.com and related websites (*.phpBB.com).
Early last year, we began the process of retiring Yavin, the aging server used to power all of phpBB.com for the better part of 5 years. Due to increasing ambitions and desire for stability, we opted for two identical "state of the art" servers — later named Phobos and Deimos — as replacements. The specifications for each of these these systems is as follows:
Code: Select all
2X Quad Core AMD Opteron 2384 - 4 x 512K Cache, 2.7GHz, 1Ghz HyperTransport
4X 4GB, 667MHz Dual Ranked DIMMs
7X 146GB 15K RPM Serial-Attach SCSI 3Gbps 3.5-in HotPlug HardDrive (one cold spare)
PERC6i SAS RAID Controller, 2x4 Connectors, Int, PCIe, 256MB cache, x6 Bkpl
SAS/SATA RAID 10 PERC 5/i Integrated, PERC 6/i Integrated
Intel PRO 1000PT Dual Port 1GbE NIC, PCIe-4
Dell Remote Access Card, 5th Generation for PowerEdge Remote Management
Power Cord, NEMA 5-15P to C14,15 amp, wall plug, 10 feet / 3 meter
Redundant Power Supply with Dual Cords

As most of you are already aware, the Oregon State University Open Source Lab has been providing hosting and operation services to the phpBB project since March 2006. In order to supplement our own servers, OSUOSL has been hosting the www.phpBB.com database on their shared infrastructure.
Recently, the fine folks at Schooner Information Technology made a generous hardware donation to OSUOSL which has allowed them to move our database to a considerably better machine. As of this time yesterday, www.phpBB.com's database has been running on the following system:
Code: Select all
2X Quad-core Intel Xeon 5500 “Nehalem” Series Processors - 8 MB cache (max)
64GB 1333MHz, fully buffered, DDR-3 RDIMM memory
4X SATA HDDs - OS
8X SATA 64GB Intel X25-e solid state drives (512GB total) - Data
We would like to thank Schooner Information Technology for their donation and OSUOSL for their continued support.
