Rocketz...

The file that is under the Contrib folder (the color_groups_compatibility add on) is for those users who want to install the admin_userlist who ALSO use Nivisec's Color Groups mod. If you don't use Nivisec's Color Groups mod, you should not touch the contrib folder's contents here.

If you have already done so... then you need to do this to undo the changes you made:

Code: Select all

I have not yet launched my forum . It is a version 2.0.22 . keeping subsilver with minor changes i made manually to change some fonts and colors .
I am planning to add only two to three mods. In addition to the admin user list, I am looking at textual confirmation and perhaps also link rejector.
My questions are:
1- do you recommend a particular order of installation of these different mods?
2- how long is the installation time of the user list?
3- do you recommend going for easy mod in general?
I know html fairly well and managed to fiddle with codes in the tpl files by searching these pages for the manual changes I wanted to make but I do not have any experience with sql or php and am not sure what installing mods will entail.

There is no need to use Easymod with this one. You are only tacking a few lines in the language file. Other than that, the whole thing is enclosed in a new file.

Yes... in general EasyMod is good practice... but it will usually only do 90% of the installs. Some will just not work (spaces in the wrong spot or whatever can trip it up) and you have to do the install manually when it says it found errors when processing the mod files.

This mod is fairly easy to install and shouldn't take more than five minutes if you are doing it manually.

Though as to your list of mods you want... I HIGHLY suggest you get "Better CAPTCHA" installed and install about 10 custom fonts from dafont.com isntead of the ones it comes with. Read their thread for info... but that mod is hands down the best anti-spam bot registration, spam bot poster mod out there.

You'll see my posts on their thread to hear more about my experience there...

I just want to emphasize this suggestion more. I was helping to moderate (which means delete) spam user IDs and there were about 10 to 15 per day on a site I assist on. After getting that MOD installed the number dropped to ZERO. In fact we tested several times to mkke sure it was still possible for humans to register because the drop in registrations was so dramatic.

Thanks for y our help and suggestions.
It seems like I downloaded the mod successfully.
Shouldn't I now "remove links to memberlist from overall header and delete the file memberlist.php"?

why not?
when I ran a security check . The main problem reported was : memberlist.php present.
My research on how to fix that led me to threads recommending to install userlist mod and destroy memberlist.php altogether.

If I were to delete the file and remove links to it would that cause any harm that you know of ?

I'm not an expert... but I think memberlist.php is the page that is available to your users to show them who the registered accounts are. It's not a security issue... it just shows folks NOT on the boards what the names are. Getting rid of that would kill that ability. It's a built in part of phpBB and is NOT a bad thing... but you may want to ask for clarification on the support board.

If you use Redirect Anonymous: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... +anonymous it will prevent guests from seeing your memberlist.

The memberlist and the Admin Userlist have nothing to do with each other.

There are several MODs out there that will require sign-up to view the memberlist if you want to block access to non-members. The only real thing that you want to block though is that spam-bots can harvest email addreses if shown. So you could hide those manually if you wanted.

Freitag, Brf, Milkboy

Thankyou for your clarifications.
So if I restrict memberlist to members or admin that should be enough to discourage spammers and bots? and the bot testing my forum's security I suppose would not be able to get to the file and thus will not return :
memberlist.php present even with it still being there.

milkboy and others: is there a post in this topic or elsewhere with some code showing how to add to the userlist each user's last ip used when logging in? I know that terrafrost has a mod for logging that when a user registers, but I'm wondering about one that keeps track of it going forward. Should be easy to write, but I figured I would save myself some coding if someone else has already done it...

I'm not sure... :-( There were multiple posts about such a mod, but I don't recall if any were successful in doing that or not. I know Terrafrost's mod was one but I THOUGHT someone had mentioned another one that kept it updated with the latest IP info. But I'm sure that I can't tell you where I saw that. Sorry I'm not much help. Perhaps the search feature will be your friend here. ;)
