Even better is this (and it's free!):

Crimson Editor 3.60 Release (Freeware)
Crimson Editor is a professional source editor for Windows.
This program is not only fast in loading time, but also small in size (so small that it can be copied in one floppy disk).

It will load multiple pages at once as tabs, allowing easy editing and comparison of files.
While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for programming languages such as PHP, HTML, C/C++, Perl and Java.

Syntax Highlighting for PHP, HTML, C/C++, Perl, Java, Matlab and LaTeX. Also, it can be extended for other programming languages based on custom syntax files.

Other features include undo/redo, user tools, macros, spell checker, built-in FTP, and more.

for those who have problems with COMMON.PHP (and maybe others):

check if you have processed previous updates!

i had problem with my common.php (couldn't find needed part of code). my problem was that i've skipped 2.0.10 to 2.0.11 update (it is a phpbbhacks solution that i found today)) heretofore i thought it is only visual confirmation update (i have no need in it).
in official phpbb news i couldn't find code changes (my board is heavily modded). phpBB 2.0.11 released - Critical update

so, i ask developers to release code changes as MOD _always_ ( i see now it's going as well - respect )
such as:
[2.0.13] phpBB 2.0.13 to 2.0.14 Code Changes
phpBB 2.0.13 released - Critical Update
[Tool] phpBB 2.0.11 to phpBB 2.0.12 Code Changes

i hope that helps. thank you.

Hmmm, this topic has gone a bit stale, but hopefully someone is still able to help me with my problem.

I have recently been given access to do some of the administration of a forum (yes, a newbie), and I am currently trying to get the site updated from 2.0.11 upto the current version.
Unfortunately I am stuck at step 1, update from 2.0.11 to 2.0.12. :roll:

After manually updating all of the appropriate files and running the update_to_latest file, the forum displays the following error:

Code: Select all

Parse error: parse error in /var/www/html/forum/common.php on line 56

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: session_pagestart() in /var/www/html/forum/index.php on line 35
An updated line 56 in common.php, as per code change instructions, is as follows:

Code: Select all

$test = array('HTTP_GET_VARS' => NULL, 'HTTP_POST_VARS' => NULL, 'HTTP_COOKIE_VARS' => NULL, 'HTTP_SERVER_VARS' => NULL, 'HTTP_ENV_VARS' => NULL, 'HTTP_POST_FILES' => NULL, 'phpEx' => NULL, 'phpbb_root_path' => NULL);_ENV_VARS' => NULL, 'HTTP_POST_FILES' => NULL);
And line 35 in forum/index.php is:

Code: Select all

$userdata = session_pagestart($user_ip, PAGE_INDEX);
From what I can tell, from looking at common.php, the second error is most likely caused by the first (correct me if I am wrong).

Any ideas what's gone wrong here? Let me know if I need to supply more info (like the full code from common.php).

Thanks
Andy

...

Well, since you already figured out that the immediate problem is line 56 of common.php, why didn't you go back and look at what the instructions to this update tell you to do with that lone. It says to replace the line (the whole line) with certain text. You have not done that...your line 56 does not look like the line that the mod tells you to replace line 56 with. FOr example, in the middle of the array you've got a close paren and semicolon that does not appear in the correct line.

But if you get that straightened out, there may well be a bunch of other errors like that. Her's my mantra: easymod is my frined...

Damn it. The one thing I wanted to do was to avoid asking a stoopid newbie question. Now look what I have gone and done. :oops:
Obviously the work of sloppy cut and pasting in Notepad. :?

Thanks for your help, Alan, hopefully that is the only problem. I will be more vigilant in my checking.
I'll also look into EasyMod. :cool:

No problem. But if you are going to do mods in the future, you should also consider getting a real text editor...notepad is fine but doesn't help do any of the work for you. I use textpad, but there are lots of good text editors out there.

And yes, definitely install easymod. It will install really complicated mods for you instantaneously (and it doesn't make errors).

Update fixed. After fixing line 56, I found one more error too, but that was a similar cut and paste problem. :roll:
Thanks again.
Lesson learned.

Yep, just downloaded Crimson Editor yesterday. Seems a lot more useful.

I whipped through the tutorial until i reached
templates/subSilver/admin/index_body.tpl

1.

FIND - Line 80
2.0.11 Code:

Code: Select all

      </table>

      <br />

AFTER, ADD
2.0.12 Code:

Code: Select all

      <h1>{L_VERSION_INFORMATION}</h1>

      {VERSION_INFO}

      <br />

Problem is, line 80 is smack dab in the middle of some form... Here is my index_body.tpl file Starting at Line 80 until the end of file.

Code: Select all

		&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;{L_AUTO_LOGIN}
		<input class="text" type="checkbox" name="autologin" />
		&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
		<input type="submit" class="mainoption" name="login" value="{L_LOGIN}" />
		</span> </td>
	</tr>
  </table>
</form>
<!-- END switch_user_logged_out -->

<br clear="all" />

<table cellspacing="3" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0">
  <tr>
	<td width="20" align="center"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/folder_new_big.gif" width="46" height="25" alt="{L_NEW_POSTS}"/></td>
	<td><span class="gensmall">{L_NEW_POSTS}</span></td>
	<td>&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>
	<td width="20" align="center"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/folder_big.gif" width="46" height="25" alt="{L_NO_NEW_POSTS}" /></td>
	<td><span class="gensmall">{L_NO_NEW_POSTS}</span></td>
	<td>&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>
	<td width="20" align="center"><img src="templates/subSilver/images/folder_locked_big.gif" width="46" height="25" alt="{L_FORUM_LOCKED}" /></td>
	<td><span class="gensmall">{L_FORUM_LOCKED}</span></td>
  </tr>
</table>

I'm pretty sure I havent mucked around in there ever.
Anyway, there are a couple of

Code: Select all

</table>
tags after line 80, as u see. Where do i put the new code? right at the end? or after the second last one?

Ignore that last post - I'm an idiot. Was modifying the wrong "index_body.tpl" file. :oops: BTW, all went very smoothly - nice upgrade tutorial - now onto 2.0.12 -->> 2.0.13 !! :twisted:
