Heh, thanks DKing.
My biggest MOD to date, although it is quite small ;)

Basically the MOD does what it says -- Adds a navigation bar to the top and bottom of your forums. The links can be easily edited via a newpage in the ACP.
It is very simple to add more links - basically look at the code to see how it's done. It should also be easy enough to figure out to to remove links.

*UPDATE - PLEASE READ (15th April 2007)*

Forgot that I posted an announcement here, but I am back and supporting my MODs again.
cherokee red will be shutting down in August, so my MOD support will only be here.
I will not be answering any emails or pm's on my MODs, only in the MODs respective topics.

Please not that I will continue to support my MODs whenever I can, but support will be limited. Thanks for your support and appreciation ;)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Links will not save:
Everything installed fine, but any links I add won't save once I click submit.

A very common problem, but very simple to overcome.
Simply put, you haven't added the necessary SQL code to your database.
Copy the db_update.php file to your forums root directory (where common.php and index.php are).

Now point your web browser (IE, FF, Opera) to the location of that file, ie:
http://www.YOUR_SITE.com/YOUR_FORUMS/db_update.php
If that doesn't work, try pasting the code from extras/sql.txt into your Database Editor (in your websites control panel).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Change the color of the links:
is there away to change the color and the size so they might be bigger

in overall_header/footer find the following code:

Code: Select all

      <td class="catHead" height="37" align="center">
      <span class="genmed">
change the span class to whatever you like - best to create a new class in your CSS, then you can have the font and size whatever you want ;)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

New window for links:
One request, could the links be made to open in a new window so that users can use the links as a reference whilst using the forum without actually leaving it. I know it is simple to do by right clicking or whatever but I know many of my forum users aren't that switched on.

certainly, all you have to do is edit the overall_header.tpl and overall_footer.tpl files.
Where you see for example: -

Code: Select all

<a href="{NAV_LINK1}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME1}</a>
add:

Code: Select all

 target="_blank"
after

Code: Select all

class="genmed"
so the end result would be:

Code: Select all

<a href="{NAV_LINK2}" class="genmed" target="_blank">{NAV_NAME2}</a>
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Images as links:
Can i use images instead of text as a link?

In your ACP under rEd bar, you should be able to use <img src=" . . ." /> as the name. If you put a standard http:// link in the links box and click submit you have an image set as a link :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Add more links:
How do I add more links to the rEdbar?

It's simple enough. I've detailed it in this post -> click here

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Errors:
I get an error like redbar_config doesn't exist, what do i do?

Looks like you haven't updated the database. There is a database update script that came with this MOD. Uplad it to your forums and point your browser to that location ie http://www.mysite.com/forums/db_update.php - you should get confirmation that the database was updated. Now delete the file :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Header/Footer:
I want to only have the rEdbar show in the header/footer, how do I do that?

Simple, open up overall_header/footer.tpl and delete everything between the following lines:

Code: Select all

<!-- rEdbar 2 -->

 . . .

<!-- rEdbar 2 -->
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have anything else that could go here, let me know.
Any problems or requests with/for this MOD, please post them in here. don't post on my board please, as I don't support my MODs there ;)

thanks to ycl6, terrafrost and fountain of apples :wink:

Something I have been looking for - Thanks!

One request, could the links be made to open in a new window so that users can use the links as a reference whilst using the forum without actually leaving it. I know it is simple to do by right clicking or whatever but I know many of my forum users aren't that switched on.

Thanks again!

[quote="cherokee red"]Heh, thanks DKing.
For a demo, see my test board by [url=http://cherokeered.mrikasu.com/board/]clicking here[url][/quote]

Can't visit that URL (DNS error), but mrikasu.com itself works.
Is it just me (maybe my ISP's DNS wasn't updated yet after 24 hours)?

You got a "Seperate page" rEd bar that is currently under development... will you submit that to mod database later ? I try to download it, but the link is a 404 not find.

To remove the links bar from the header, simply edit the overall_header.tpl file and remove the modifications my MOD places in there :)

Code: Select all

<!-- begin rEdbar -->
<table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" align="center">
   <tr>
      <td class="catHead" height="37" align="center">
      <span class="genmed">      | <a href="{NAV_LINK1}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME1}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK2}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME2}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK3}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME3}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK4}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME4}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK5}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME5}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK6}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME6}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK7}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME7}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK8}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME8}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK9}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME9}</a>
      | <a href="{NAV_LINK10}" class="genmed">{NAV_NAME10}</a>
   <br />
   </tr>
</table>
<!-- end rEdbar -->
i'm sure that is the code you would need to remove, however it may be slightly different :)

Cool!
Reading the mod only shows top/bottom nav links, but your test page shows left links too. How come? A hidden feature in the mod?
