Ok thanks, that was a problem that emerged from making the fix wrongly. The installation worked before, but when people do it manually they seem to be doing it in a different way than EM and thus get it wrongly. So that is now fixed in v1.14.9, also the language stuff you pointed out was fixed, thanks.

As for the problems with updating a user, haven't experienced that...

Update here for now

While I liek this mod I had to disable the tooltips functionality, it simpley added to much time to page builds, users with dialup connections complained and even those with broadband didn't like the overhead.

If there ever was an example of using the new Asychronous technology (AJAX) this is it!! (This allows the tooltip data to be fiulled in dynamically, on demand so to speak).

After trial and error of different tools, learning curve, etc I'm on track with a working solution, not without need for more work.
It actually, so far is ridiculously easy and doesn't seem to impact many chnages to this mod. Its even possible to support both approaches through configuration.

I am going to finish this work on my own, for my own learning, but was wondering if the Mod author, or anyone else was intrested? Just testing the waters so to speak.

Im using these open source tools:

prototype.js AJAX support (based on Rails)
scriptaculous.js Presentation (more rails)
Tooltips.js Tooltips

Unfortunetly the walter zorn tooltips javascript currently used is not architected for AJAX/Web2 model. I've tried contacting Walter but no response yet. However the product does have some nice config/features the above tooltips.js doesn't support yet, like smarter placement of the tooltip. I may, though its a learning curve for me, try to take some of the work/algorithms from waltrer's and update tooltip.js - though my eyes may be bigger then my belly here :)

I agree with author.
The loading time is hudge!
I also switch off this function.
I have my own server and its CPU is always 90% free.
But when I open any forum with tooltips enabled - CPU goes to 0%!
Very bad behaviour.

Before I had another MOD called:
[2-0-7]-mouse_hover_topic_preview_v1-0-7
And there was no such problems at all!!!

Here it is. It works with 2.0.20 with out any problems.
And it works very fast.

I think the problem of current mod in java file.

Code: Select all

The reason why tooltips are slow with this mod is the parsing.

Just switch off BBcode in them and half the problem should be removed.

If I find the time I'll tinker with this to get it working with AJAX, have made different tooltips get data from ajax before, should be possible to make it work with this.

If I have the time... will see.

And if I switch BBcode and set that the MOD removes BBtags from tooltips?
This one:

Code: Select all

$lang['desc_bbcode_remove'] = 'Completely remove BBCode that is in the hatelist';
This will slow or accelerate?
Thanks

It will slow a bit because of the str_replace

But don't put bbcode into the hatelist, just set "Parse tooltips as normal posts" to No. That way the tooltips are just fetched and printed without any mumbo jumbo.

Another big resource hog is the permission checking... but doubt that could be made any faster than it is... (it doesn't add any queries unless you make it do groups if I remember correctly)

Done some coding on the mod and it woudl seem that by not too complicated of trickage I've shaved 200 sql queries (for a 50 topic forum) down to 6.

AJAX might not even be needed after this...

I'm reinstalling the system on my computer and then I'll have to do some small fixes and such to the code. Expect it to be downloadable in roughly 3 to 4 days.

Hi, I'm Zemons, this is my first post in phpbb.com. :P

I installed "Topic Description 1.14.5" manually, a very hard job, everything is Ok but I find this four problems that appear in the Administration Panel:

Sorry to break this to you, but I'm fairly certain all those have been fixed in the update (which isn't yet availbable in the MODDB) but if you could hold on for a few days an even never update will be released on my website and should be on it's way to the MODDB soon after.

Oh and welcome to phpbb ^^

Announcing new version 1.15.0

Now with ajaxed postparsing, which means that you can completely remove bbcode parsing of tooltips from the basic runtime and leave the job to ajax, selectively for specific descriptions they wish to see parsed.

It also allows them to view the description without bbcode and length restrictions.

Will be submitted to the MODDB as soon as I figure out the MODX thing.

Oh and welcome to phpbb ^^

Ok Swizec, I'll wait.

Oh Oh, I found a new problem, the Forum Admin -> Permissions in the Administration Panel is missing.
