The index of my forums will not save the information and no matter how many times i enter into the forum, there is nothing to read. But on the index, it is highlighted as having new posts

why is this?

Sorry, don't know. Maybe the best thing to do is to go back to your backup files and then install with easymod?

can you install with easy mod if your using a template other than subsilver?

can you install with easy mod if your using a template other than subsilver?

Yes. Easymod will then try to make the same changes to your other template that it is supposed to make to subSilver. If it can't find lines in the template that it is looking for, it skips that template and tell you what it skipped so you can make the changes in that template manually, but it goes ahead and makes all other changes (e.g. changes in the core phpbb files as well as in subSilver).

Now that everything is working fine i have noticed that there is no button to "mark as unread". I searched the viewtopic.php and all of the edits were put in but i still have no button or option.

Now that everything is working fine i have noticed that there is no button to "mark as unread". I searched the viewtopic.php and all of the edits were put in but i still have no button or option.

Are you sure the button is not there? Take a look at the upper right hand corner of each post - the place where the quote button sits - and see if there is a small yellow icon there that says 'mark post as unread' when you hover the mouse over it.

If it's not there, the most likely problem is your edits of viewtopic_body.tpl (like marian0810 already suggested). When you use subsilver, does the button appear?

Also, note that the author's notes some information about how to add a textual link (mark post as unread) at the bottom of each post if you prefer that to the icon that the regular mod adds.

I've used this mod for a long time now and it's very good it does everything we wanted from it and more however just recently I had an idea that would be useful to us and maybe others too? and that's the ability for an Admin or Moderator to mark an old topic as unread for every user, could be used for example to draw members attention to an old post which has been updated but you don't really want to make a new post to bring up the unread flag for everyone. I had initially thought that it may be possible to do through phpMyAdmin but due to the way the unread topics are all listed in one field I couldn't see a way to update the field with an extra topic_id without wiping the existing field values.

This led me onto thinking about using php to call each members user_unread_topics field then treat it as a string, add the extra topic id to the list then add the new string back into the user_unread_topics field again but it struck me that this would needed to be repeated for every member, and would put alot of extra work on the server?

I've had a quick search through this thread, but couldn't find anything similar mentioned it surely must be possible though? as the mod esentially does the same thing when a new post is made doesn't it (i.e. the topic ID of the new post is added to the user_unread_topic field for every user ?) I'll try experimenting a bit but some pointers would be very welcome, im only a beginner with php and I got a feeling this is going to get too complicated too quickly for me to follow

Yes, that would be very tough on the server...you'd basically have to have the script do users one by one, I think.

Actually, the mod is more clever than that (I say that with no need for modesty because it was ptirhiik rather than me that initially came up the concept and the original mod). The mod only updates a user's urnead posts when that user signs on (so the mod only needs to figure things out for one user).

To see what I am talking about, try the following:

- start with a particular user (e.g. a test account) and make sure that that user has no unread posts

- take a look at that user's 'user_unread_topics' field (in the users table) and it should look something like this: 0//1200069491// (the long number is a unix timestamp and since there are no topic_ids listed that indicates the user is up to date and the last time the user was on the board with no unread posts was that time...the mod uses that time so that next time the user logs on the mod can easily figure out which topics have had posts since that time)

- now log on as another user (like yourself) and post a few times

- and finally, take a look at the test user's 'user_unread_topics' field, and you will see that it is unchanged: it still looks something like this: 0//1200069491//

That entry will never get updated until the test user logs on again. When the user logs on, the mod figures out which topics have last posts after that timestamp and updates the 'user_unread_topics' field to list those topics (and to give 'time offset' information for any topic where the user has in fact read some but not all of the topic, so that the mod knows where in a topic the user is).

I don't think there's an efficient way to do what you are describing within the context of the mod the way it is set up. I suppose you could have a parallel unread concept using an additional field...if the admin wanted to mark everyone unread, there would be a simple query that would insert the topic id and time of post the admin was marking in that field for every single user. When the user next logged in, the mod would check not only the regular unreads that this mod usually brings up, but also any unreads that are listed in the new field. Probably doable (though I have no interest in doing it myself). Merlin, thoughts?

I hadn't considered using a separate table / field but I can see its probably the best approach so far, I'll have a play with it over the weekend to see if I can bodge something together, will let you know If I get anywhere with it.

By the way, the other neat thing (again the credit goes to ptirhiik) is that the full timestamp is only used for the endpoints; in the middle of each entry where there are topics listed, the number is only an 'offset' showing how far away from the initial timestamp for that topic. The offsets are much shorter than the the full timestamp, so this approach saves db storage space.

The question itself probably springs from the (wrong) idea that this mod remembers EACH POST whether it is read or not. It doesn't. It remembers ONE TIME per topic, any and all posts after that time are unread. So there is no easy way to mark a single post within a topic as read. You will always mark the whole topic from that post onwards as unread. This is not only efficient, it is also logical, assuming people read a topic from start to finish, there is only one point in each topic where you stopped reading...

There is only one reasonable way that I can see that warrants changing the time of a post, and that is if you update te LAST post in a topic. Then it will get the current date and time, making it effectively unread for everyone. I'm not sure if this is a regular mod but I have had it for years on my forum. It is handy for stickies and forum rules that nobody can reply to, if you change it, it automatically becomes unread for everyone again. For most cases, this simple mod will suffice, but it will only affect the last post of a topic.

If you want to make a complete section of a topic unread again, not just your own post that you've edited but all UNCHANGED and READ posts after that (which is very illogical and may make subsequent posts seem weird, have the wrong quotes etc.) then there is an easy solution, just alter all post times of posts in that topic, starting with your own post, to the current time, plus one second for each post (the minimum resolution of that variable is one second). This will put some post times in the future, but it carries very little overhead and doesn't need tampering with any unread data.

(On my forum, people who intentionally alter posts and make the topic unhinge or make other authors after that look stupid because of their edits, get banned or put on moderated - just FYI - giving the option, is inviting that type of problem too )

If you just want to make your own post unread again, the correct way to do it is to copy or quote it and create a new post, indicating what you changed and why, possibly referring back to your old post. The main reason why it may be a good idea to stick to what everyone expects, is simply that: it is what everyone expects and won't confuse your members.

But like I said, it is fairly easy to alter all post times in a topic from time X onwards to a new time if you insist.
