SPAM Words ... where does this sit now?

Post by bsdmike » Wed Mar 29, 2006 4:34 pm

Just wondering what the current development level of
this mod is?

Are you able to spot embedded control characters? bold,
underline, etc. yet?

People who use this, does it help?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,
the MOD is not in development - it is released by the phpBB Team. The MOD strips out bbcode before measuring the message against spam words (but it does not strip out bbcode from posts)

Spam Words

Post by bsdmike » Wed Mar 29, 2006 7:20 pm

Thanks!
One more question if you don't mind.
How effective has it been for board operators?
Our volunteer moderators are really getting beaten up.
(As they run an open board)

Thanks,
Mike

Well, it depends a little bit on how well you can predict what the spammers are going to write about. The MOD seems quite effective on one of my sites and the words always seem to be more or less the same (casino, etc etc).

It occurs that the url is brought as bbcode

For the decision of a problem with check url
I have made the following:

Code: Select all

#
#-----[ OPEN ]------------------------------------------
#
includes/spamwords.php
#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#

	$message = preg_replace("/\[.*?:$bbcode_uid:?.*?\]/si", '', $message);
	$message = preg_replace('/\[url\]|\[\/url\]/si', '', $message);

#
#-----[ REPLACE ]------------------------------------------
#

//	$message = preg_replace("/\[.*?:$bbcode_uid:?.*?\]/si", '', $message);
//	$message = preg_replace('/\[url\]|\[\/url\]/si', '', $message);

#
#-----[ SAVE/CLOSE FILE ]------------------------------------------
#
# EoM
Now all works :)

"failed to open stream" error

Post by ryanSea » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:01 am

I just installed this MOD. It looks like it will be fantastic (everything works in the admin panel); however, when I add new posts to the forums I get a variety of errors. The first looks like this:

Warning: main(./includes/spamwords.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in e:\web\public_html\[...snip...]\forum\posting.php on line 566

(yes, I snipped the file path just for the purpose of this post - it's not that way in my posting.php file)

I'm completely inexperienced when it comes to PHP. I also noticed this MOD was for 2.0.19 and I'm running only 2.0.4.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Looks like you forgot to upload spamwords.php to your includes folder.

I want to thank you for this superb MOD!

I and my moderators have deleted hundreds of spam messages the last few weeks.

My forum is school related, and sometimes a porn-spam was posted an hour or two until one of us moderators logged in to see it and delete it.

This resulted in no less than 4 e-mails in two days from "worried father", "IT-responsible teacher", etc, where they expressed their worries about porn-links on a site for children, and that they could not link to my page anymore if it was a risk that their childs/pupils would see porn-links.

I have now installed your mod, and in a little more than 24 hours, more than 20 spam messages are stopped. Only 2 pill-spams have gone through, but now I have updated the spam-list with actual medical spamwords too.

Your MOD has really "saved" my forum. THANK YOU! :D

hi,

first of all big thnx to joe for this wonderful and useful mod. nevertheless i have 2 problems:
- in the admin panel i have 1... 1418 pages listed to be containing spam posts, but only one contains spam
- when i chose to delete the post i get a 'Sorry, but you can only delete your own posts.' message although my userlevel is 1 (admin).

maybe a suggestion for future release:
- check/uncheck all spam-posts + delete checked in the admin panel.

Hmm, sounds weird. I haven't encountered anything like the behavior you're experiencing. Sorry, but I can't really help you with that as I have know idea what might be causing those problems...

SQL Error : 1146 spam_words_config_table

Post by stizzle » Mon Apr 17, 2006 7:58 pm

I am having a peculiar error when trying to access spam words config.

phpBB : Critical Error
Could not query config information
DEBUG MODE
SQL Error : 1146 Table 'swclin.spam_words_config_table' doesn't exist
SELECT * FROM SPAM_WORDS_CONFIG_TABLE
Line : 43
File : admin_spamwords_config.php

All other menu items give this error
Template->make_filename(): Error - file admin/spamwords_list_body.tpl does not exist

Line 43 is...
message_die(CRITICAL_ERROR, 'Could not query config information', '', __LINE__, __FILE__, $sql);

1. The mod DB install was all green and the message said successful.
2. I checked mySQL tables and that table does in fact exist.
3. I checked for missing files and all are there.

I found this thread that gives possible causes and many of which I have ruled out.

http://www.phpbbhacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32020

is anyone else experiencing this after the mod install? My forum still works, it's just I cant access this cool mods features and settings.

I am running phpBB2 2.0.19 stable

Just want to add my thanks for this MOD. It's a great help for our board because we are trying to avoid having to block legitimate guests from posting, but have been fighting a daily battle with guest posts from porn sites. Now that I've read through this thread again, I'm happy to see that I CAN get the IPs from the porn ''guest" posters and ban them. That helps to stop at least some repeat posts from the bozos.

One question though, I notice that if I click on the IP of the spammer in the spam words log, it does a trace scan of my IP? Is this what wmwgt was mentioning on.. page 4 of this thread? Is this a concern in any way? Just curious.

Again, thanks for this mod, it gets better every day!

I have been wondering whether there is a way to add all the spam words at once as it is a bit inconvinient to add them one by one..
