Re: [2.0.19] Smartfeed

Houser,

If you have the option of PHP 5 you can try going with that. Such a change introduces risk. Hopefully you phpBB installation will continue to work transparently. You may not be able to revert.

It really depends on what libraries are integrated into PHP 5 by your web host. You can simply file a technical support ticket and ask, "If I switch to PHP 5, will the mcrypt library be available?" If yes that would be a compelling reason to upgrade.

Smartfeed 1.21 is now an official release

Post by MarkDHamill » Sun Dec 23, 2007 6:07 pm

Smartfeed 1.21 is now an officially revised phpBB modification. It includes the higher security feature required by the phpBB Mod Team. Basically it depends on mcrypt and will only serve public forums if it is not present.

It can be downloaded here, but will also be available on my site:

http://www.phpbb.com/mods/db/index.php? ... ib_id=1455

Please note the version on my site has a better French language translation provided by Sylvain Bourdon. There were two minor changes applied by the phpBB Mod Team which are included in the archive on my site.

Hello Mark,

Since I've modified Smartfeed quite a lot, would it be possible for you to publish the code changes to apply the two minor modifications done by the phpBB Mod team to version 1.21?

Thanks a lot and happy holidays to all!

Sylvain, that version is on my site. I was hoping it would get put in the version on the phpbb.com site but I'm afraid not. At this point I'd have to create another version and submit it again. As I discovered it is not always easy to get another version approved. I'd prefer to wait until I had changes to all the languages translations in first.

I made the query at my webhotel and they, as you predicted did not have that option on our webhotel.
I suppose I will have to look for a new webhotel.
Pity but there it is...

oh and Merry Xmas!

Not that I am recommending it but you could go with a less secure version of Smartfeed available on my website, like 1.12.

Ok,

And where is the security issue then if I may ask?
That feeds can be sniffed or traced?
Thanx again

The concern is that the encryption that I used was not sufficiently advanced and that it might be possible to infer the value of the $dbpasswd variable (or its md5 hash) with some scripting.

Forgive me for being thick. I have downloaded this, but I can find no install notes in the unzipped folder. Other mods seem to have step-by-step guides - Do this to the SQL dB; Cut and paste this code into this file here etc.

Am I missing something?

Do you support BBtags to categorize information in a post?

BBCode is translated in the feed into the HTML equivalents, if that is what you mean.
