Updating feed?

Post by tadgill »

I'm kinda new to php, and rss. everthing seems to work fine, but is seems to not update the feed in real time,

i.e, the feed does not pick up the recent posts. What am I missing?

I'm guessing that the newsreader you are using caches the content and only refreshes every X minutes/hours. Might want to check your newsreader settings for the site.

Planned work on Smartfeed?

Post by rulem »

Hi Mark,

What work on Smartfeed are you planning? I'm intending to use it, but I need some changes/additions. Probably I'll write those myself, but it would be a waste if it conflicts or overlaps with your future work.

A bit of context: as a demonstrator, I would like to add some integrated forum functionality to a client application. This client application does all sorts of thing, supporting forum functionality will be just a (small?) part of it. I would like to let this client communicate with phpBB via the Atom interface.

The Atom API (although still an IETF draft: draft-ietf-atompub-protocol-08.txt) also supports post, update and delete functions. Adding these will be a next step.

Ruud, I had no particular plans but I am listening to suggestions here and am open to incorporating them. The latest release contains requests from users on this topic.

I do think I need to work the issue of removing "bad" data from the feed so that there are less warnings and such by the feed validator.

I don't know much about Atom's new functionality. I would note though that I integrated an existing PHP class which does the grunt work of putting out the feed, so I am somewhat constrained by what those developers did.

It was developed on 2.0.19 and tested more recently on 2.0.20. It is EasyMod compatible.

Oops im getting this error when trying to run smartfeed_url.php now

Code: Select all

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '}' in /home/wwwenra/public_html/forums/includes/template.php(127) : eval()'d code on line 144
Going back to old version ;)

I'm using cat_hierarchy btw!

Oh yeah - you didnt mention before - is it possible to stop it displaying the forum name?

Hmm, I just doublecheck smartfeed_url_body.tpl and I didn't find any unmatched { or } characters. By any chance did you modify the template? It's the only place I use the template system.

The forum name can be removed by changing line 588 in smartfeed.php:

Code: Select all

				$item->title = ($row['post_subject'] == '') ? entity_decode($row['forum_name'] . ' :: ' . $row['topic_title']) : entity_decode($row['forum_name'] . ' :: ' . $row['post_subject']);
At some point I need to figure out a way to make this more flexible with a constant like I did for the date and time logic, by moving it into smartfeed_constants.php.

I have no idea. I don't use the hierarchy mod or the ezportal. All official mods are developed against the current phpBB base code, as was this one.

That's not to say it couldn't be done, but I am unlikely to do it except perhaps for a fee.

It could be done with PayPal.

However, I would first want to scope the work involved before I'd agree to do the work. I've never used ezPortal.

Then I'd have to find the time, often a bit of a challenge!
