Re: No idea how to install

I see this: "Files To Edit: usercp_register.php, profile_add_body.tpl"

But I don't know what goes to which file, or where it goes in the file. Or if it all goes to both files. Can you help?

Hello,

This mod is great. I run four PHPBB boards for our company's customers to discuss our software, so porn and spam bots were not welcome!

Not one has got through so far :D

Best Wishes,
Nick

Nice little mod, but spammer can configure bots to enter website URL in the signature field, without having to enter anything in the website field, effectively bypassing this block.

Here's a little add-on to address this.

Code: Select all

#
#-----[ OPEN ]------------------------------------------
#
includes/usercp_register.php

#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
			if( $website != '' )
			{
			die();
			}

#
#-----[ REPLACE WITH]------------------------------------------
#
			if( $website != '' || $signature != '')
			{
			die();
			}

#
#-----[ OPEN ]------------------------------------------
#
templates/subSilver/profile_add_body.tpl

#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#
	<tr>
	  <td class="row1"><span class="gen">{L_SIGNATURE}:</span>

#
#-----[ BEFORE, ADD ]------------------------------------------
#
	<!-- BEGIN only_show_notbot -->

#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#

		<textarea name="signature"style="width: 300px"  rows="6" cols="30" class="post">{SIGNATURE}</textarea>
	  </td>
	</tr>

#
#-----[ AFTER, ADD ]------------------------------------------
#
	<!-- END only_show_notbot -->

To do that, the bot would have to post (as the signature isn't seen unless the user posts).

This MOD was made to stop the breed of bots which don't post, but have their www field filled in, and listed in the memberlist :)

Thanks for the info / addon :)

You're right about that posting part battye. However, I've encountered a few spam bots that were configured to post random junks on my site.

Your method seems to work well, and I'll see if I can incorporate IP ban to it.

Having a hard time understanding this mod. Made the code additions to includes/usercp_register.php, and added the two comments to templates/subSilver/profile_add_body.tpl. Now when I try to register, the website field is still available, but if you enter anything, the process craps out. This is a reasonable way to stop spambots, but I don't see how this doesn't also affect human registrants. Is the website field not supposed to show up at all, forcing users to set their website in their profile? Wouldn't a better mod just have admins remove the website field altogether? Am I missing something?

Very nice mod, battye. Simple, yet effective. On my board, I added a line that logged the registration attempt right before die() (mainly just my curiosity), and have noticed a sharp decline of successful spammer registrations.

Unfortunately, like dccb noted with his addition to the mod, spammers are using other fields to get their way. In some instances, even after adding the mod, spammers were adding their URLs to other fields (Occupation, Location, etc.). Similar to how dccb included the signature field to the mod, I've blocked everything in the Profile Information area of the form.

I'll post my changes if anyone is interested.
