In Reply To v1.0.2

This mod is converts phpBB into something between a flat page forum and a threaded forum. The current download contains instructions written for phpBB version 2.0.4, however posts towards the end of this thread describe the minor changes in installation needed for versions 2.0.5 and 2.0.6.

Features:
  • Adds the ability to reply to specific posts in a discussion
  • Adds the ability to navigate to the original post a message is in reply to
  • Adds the name of the author of the post you are replying to
  • Existing posts in a forum are unaffected (only applies to new posts)
Please note that this mod is no longer supported by the author. If you wish to update this mod for phpBB 3.x, please feel free.

This mod adds a new Reply button next to the Quote button, which allows you to reply to a specific post.

The functionality of the old Post Reply button remains unaffected.

Posts made by clicking on the new Reply button will be linked back to the original message, allowing reverse browsing of a discussion.

If anyone feels like beta testing this and ensuring it works, please feel free! :D

Hi!
I have installed this mod and works great for me!

Only one question.. do you have any idea how I could change the colour of the text that says "Carpe Diem wrote"? And I guess the same goes for both the "Quote" and "Code" thing.. I would like to change the font colour of these words!

Much appreciated!
:D

I've just had a quick look and I think you need to proceed as follows:

Damn there it was, in bbcode.tpl!!!

Thx a lot, I searched the whole .css and .cfg files and also had a long look inside the php files but here it was!

Again, thx for the good work, this is a very useful mod IMHO, at least for me! I noticed some friends as well about this one!

Possible Bug

I may have found a bug in this. On my board if the new post is the first one on the new page the in reply to link doesn't appear.

For example I had the number of messages set to 10 per page, and when I replied to a thread with exactly 10 messages the 11th shows up without the link...

Can anybody confirm this possible bug? Thanks.

Hi there Charboy,

You're right! :roll:

It occurs in this section of the mod:
(From the original mod, when altering viewtopic.php...)

#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#

$quote = '<a href="' . $temp_url . '">' . $lang['Reply_with_quote'] . '</a>';

#
#-----[ AFTER, ADD ]------------------------------------------
#

$temp_url = append_sid("posting.$phpEx?mode=reply_post&" . POST_POST_URL . "=" . $postrow[$i]['post_id']);
$reply_post_img = '<a href="' . $temp_url . '"><img src="' . $images['icon_reply_post'] . '" alt="' . $lang['Reply_Post'] . '" title="' . $lang['Reply_Post'] . '" border="0" /></a>';

if ( $i == 0 || empty($postrow[$i]['in_reply_to']))
{
$Post_in_reply_to = '';
$Reply_post = '';
$View_post = '';
}
else
{
$Post_in_reply_to = $lang['In_reply_to'];
$Reply_post = 'this message';
$View_post = '<a href="' . append_sid("viewtopic.$phpEx?" . POST_POST_URL . '=' . $postrow[$i]['in_reply_to']) . '#' . $postrow[$i]['in_reply_to'] . '">' . $Reply_post . '</a>';
}

Simply remove the $i == 0 || part of the if statement and upload the altered file.

I've updated the zip. Thanks, and good catch! :D

Thank you again for this awesome MOD, it's something everybody was asking for on my board. One suggestion: I think it would better if the "quote" button also gives the link back, and that the only difference between the "quote" and the "reply" button is whether the quoted text appears in the edit box. If one wants to reply without the link they can use the old "post reply", but if somebody is bothering to quote text then they are replying to a specific message so the link should be there, so the quote button as it is doesn't seem as useful as a button which replies without quoted text, the users on my board would like a way to respond without having to delete all the quoted text each time. How hard would that be?

Hello again Charboy,

I like those ideas of yours, and I'll see about implementing them for the next release. I'm kinda bogged down at the mo with other stuff, but I'll get 'round to it sometime soon.

Regards,

To any developers out there...

One addition to this mod I'd like to see is the sending of a notification email to the original poster when one replies to their post. This would be distinct from the general notifications that phpBB already sends.

However, I've no idea where to start with this. Can anyone here point me in the right direction?

I wish it to display "In reply to User A" instead of "In reply to this message. How can I do that?

Many many thanks for this mod as I have expected it for a long time! 8)
