Although that is valid xml, it's not RSS. I decided when i was putting the parses together to stick to RSS, although with time i mat add support for other formats in the future.

Have a read of this - http://www.newsisfree.com/syndicate.php - specifically the > Personnal Syndication Services bit.

Yea I been checking that out, in fact I made a membership but I have yet to get a single RSS feed from there that pulls up anything even trying it local in a browser gets a blank page. For example the one that I mentioned FARK which the RSS tab is here ->> http://www.newsisfree.com/sources/rss/1717/

Makes no sense whats up with their RSS system. Nothing works except the XML tabs on newsisfree.com for me. :x

Yeah, that is strange. I was obviously just lucky with the one i chose - http://radio.weblogs.com/0111551/rss.xml

Since you're a member now, maybe you should send them an email asking.

I found somthing cool out today using http://www.newsisfree.com/. You can go in and customize your feed. If you use the straight .rss/.rdf feed, you do not get a description or a brief summery of the story in your forum. You only receive a "...Click for More" or something to that effect.

If found out you can modify what you want at http://www.newsisfree.com/. If you find what your looking for you can update it to cusomize how you want. I chose RSS .92 and it gives me descriptions for websites that I want to syndicate. ITs great! I can now get detailed summeries before it says "...click here for more". I REALLY recommend this site for all news feeds.

P.S. Don't worry about the URL it generates for you, IT WILL WORK!

I think i may have found a solution for this...
  • open Windows Task Scheduler
  • create a new task
  • enter "YOUR_PATH_TO_IE" "URL_TO_YOUR FORUM/news_insert.php"
  • give it a scheduled time to run
  • check the Stop the task box on the settings tab and set the value to 0 hrs 1 minute
and that should do it. it creates an ie window but this will disappear after the 1 minute specified.

i think i read that this was free while it was in beta but would eventually be a paid for service, correct me if i'm wrong.

 Yeah isn't it great! This is amazing stuff!!

Yeah the way I read things. This is beta, and probably we will have to pay for it. But I'll use it for now! I hope there will be some kind of clause for people already signed up that will not have to pay if we are already using it.

Yep, thanks Pollix as I all but gave up on http://www.newsisfree.com/ till what you said about the links working once you plug em in  Well its fun while it lasts anywho, I dunno if they go paid I think they will limit everyone and make you pay for the actual feeds that contain descripto's or partial stories, ect.. from what I could understand. Man thought its cool, my man is even returning images in my "Offbeat News" section :D

Oh Netclectic, I do think that feature you described on potentially added to allow assigning the number of returns PER each feed would be nice. For example I set up several sections er forums and I have like 4 feeds related to one forum and only one good one for another forum so this would help me equal things out better.

Man I must say I sorta overlooked this one at first but its turning out a gem, excellent work once again :!: Hell between this mod and the "Forum AI" I don't even need users now as I'm entertained as it is...

Now all I have to do is name my reporter. Hey anyone know if I can go into the database directly and change a User name as I've never had a need to try it that way yet but I don't know of any other way short of deleting the user and re-creating :?

I dunno, I just looked at that one if you mean http://www.newsfeeds.com/. It appears to be some sorta paid "Usenet" group access service totally different from this required feeds for the mod :?

Go to http://www.newsisfree.com and join (Its free).

Best way once joined and logged in is to select By Catagory under News Center column.

Now you will get a linup of catagories to choose from, just click through till you get to a desired feed NAME and click on it.

Next you want to look for
This source is available for Syndication.RSS
and click word Syndication.

-Under Personal Syndication, select RSS.92 in the dropdown (note not sure if this version selection is important but seems to work best).

-Make sure you leave "Send Description" checked if you want some text sent when avail instead of just links only in your retrieved news, and press the update button.

-Finally just down a little lower it will kick back to you a link after the words Copy Link: Copy/Paste this entire link right to your Admin setup in phpbb Admin-Newsfeeds box for the URL.

Note the link will look goofy without a .xml or .rss extension but like Polix pointed out to me, when its sent in the internal update function or via Cron, it does return the goods
