Lost Password Mod

Post by g01 »

I don't know if there is one yet, but for those of us who don't have access to an SMTP server for sending out registration information and passwords, there should be a keyword that a user can input at login, like "Mother's maiden name" so that if they forget it, they can input their username and "keyword" and it will display their password. However, there should also be an option to disable this, but lost passwords would require the deletion of an account, or expiration.

well there is no way to display the cirrent password because of one way encryption but I think there should be a mod like that but it just sets a new password and show you the pass

yes, I'm doing it the same way you do the 'email new password', but without the email. The safety, instead of email, is a secret question/answer.

The passwords on phpBB use the md5() hash. You cannot revert it back.

Arghh... why cant people comprehend the difference between a hash and encryption. OK lets say we had a hash that took the numeric value of a letter (1-26) and added them up, for 'dog' we would get
d - 4
o - 15
g - 7

So we would get 26 for 'dog' and always 26, but knowing 26 cannot give us the original word. md5 is substansionally more complicated and always give a 32 character string so for any given hash there are infinate possible strings that could have produced it.

Create new password...
When someone says they forgot password they get sent a new password which they can choose to activate.

This gets sent to an email account.
In this Mod this would get put on a page... so "Request new password"
Next page = "What is your mother's maiden name?"
(if answered correctly)
Next page = "Your new password is.... Please click here to activate it".

If your board cant send an email... (smtp or server) how do ppl register?

They must just register without activation.
