Post by tof »

I just thought this morning that i could be very nice to have a Webmail Mod working like the PM Function...

If anyone like this idea and feel like doing it, that would be just great!

Thx 8)

But it would be very difficult to program that...

Not really, just an insight, I am already in the development of an enhanced Private Messaging utility called Message Center that will allow you to use pm, email, etc, using folders and stuff. This could be hooked into a system that creates an email account for every user on a server (like have one mailbox that all emails get forwarded to and chuck them straight into the database, deleteing them from the mailbox, depending on the 'to' address).

Just to let you know ;)

squirrelmail

It shouldn't be too hard to integrate squirrelmail http://www.squirrelmail.com to some degree. I'd advice keeping phpBB2 and squirrelmail mostly separate, but the appearance and URLs can be adjusted to be more suitable.

www.squirrelmail.org ;)

Yeah, we could do that, though I'd rather code it myself, personal work, etc... I've been looking at feriepost for some ideas. (sorry, don't know their website...)

i was thinking of a mod similar to this....

where i can have an email alias

for example php@netmikey.com....

and all email forward to php's private message box.....

and when that user sends an email out, it says php@netmikey.com

so all users on that site have an email addy....
good idea?

how would you specify the user? in the subject line?
to: php@netmonkey.com
subject: [sj26] Hi, how are you?

or in the to line? (I don't know if this can be done...)
to: sj26 <php@netmonkey.com>
subject: Hi, how are you?

i would do it in the to-fild. i think this is the most logical, 'cause if you type no @domain.tdl it thats the defaultdomain. In fact you don't even have to split into pivat messages and email 'cause everything can run over the smtp. just a thing of performance.

hmmm... it would be easy if we knew that everyone would have access to their server config files...

in my case i have a pop3 account where all messages with no specified mailbox goes to. if knew from a few (german) webhosters that they also do so. i don't know if any webhoster support imap. would be easier to handle but i don't think that many poeple have a chance to use such an account, so i think it would be the best way to implement pop3-support first. if we don't delete the messages from the server it would increase the trafic, so i don't think that makes sence. there could be an option to forward every unknown messages to another mailadresse. Should not ne so hard to do.
What about addressbooks? I think we should first make the plain webmailer with just getting and sending messages.
What i do not know is how to handle inkomming html-mail. we could make a list of allowed html-tags. i think this is the easiest way. for sending just making the bb-code to html and evtl. attaching pic's (like this 8) ).
Do you want pop3 acces for useres? i can't see any possibillities to get that work with this method. But i think nobody has acces to sendmail-config files and than that's a good way. ;)
What do you think?

yeap. that's the easy way. what bout users that don't have a domain/fill account or don't know how to set it up etc...? What if they have a subdirectory? it all factors in... perhaps the option of create a 'mailbox' in the database for the user can be an option the admin can set? so that only if the admin sets the account details will it be used?

If i understood you right you want to offer a service where useres can check their pop3 account from other hosters. I think it should not be so hard to do that, 'cause there are a lot of webmailers out there wich work like that. but it should be optional (both own mailboxes and catch all accounts).
How to start?
