Admin tool: phpbb news or version check on Admin Index

Post by Saubloed »

Hello!

Since i know that most phpBB admins do NOT check for news or security updates there should be a MOD or better someting build in that checks for new versions.

I think there sould be a big bold message on top of the main "Admin Index" site if there is a new security update for the installed outdated phpbb Version.

E.g. for unpatched 2.06:
Potential security issue with search

Maybe the check should be limited (once a day?) to prevent a DDoS attack like that one at 25. and 26.11.2003 from Zonealarm:

I think sourceforge produce an RSS (xml syndic) of the news. You can use it in various client/progs to be informed as quicker as possible :).

I might have something for you. I'd been working on something similar a while ago, so when i saw this i figured i'd dig it up and see what i could come up with. I'm just going to test the install and upload it, back in 5...

Ok, i'm back - Download

Description: Add a latest news column to the index page of the admin control panel. Also, adds a Latest News with full text and a Latest Releases page to the admin control panel. These pages relate to the rss feeds available from the phpBB project pages at sourceforge (see http://sourceforge.net/export/rss2_proj ... up_id=7885).

Let me know how you get on with it, all being well i'll submit it to the mods db.

Ok works but only with allow_url_fopen = On.

Maybe there sould be a warning in the install-text that register_gloabls should be off for global security reasons (register_gloabls and allow_url_fopen on is really insecure).
