Need a fix for post processing flaw on all phpBB boards

Post by ezlynx »

When a short post is made that includes stop-words and lacks words that would be added to the search tables, the post takes a long time to process and the query interferes with available cpu.

Sample post:
"Me too!"
Time to process on this board today, 90+ seconds.

Other posts today, under 10 seconds.

Suggestions to fix this flaw and maintain search and search tables properly appreciated.

Above post took a mere 68 seconds to post. This post took 3 seconds to post (I came back to edit it).

Have you looked at the code to figure out why this was happening?

I was describing something that happens to happen on my board. It also happens here. Has to be a function of how posting is structured.

Since it appears to be a function of the design of the phpBB I was hoping someone much more familiar with phpBB coding than I am could look at it.

Now that I think of it, this might be better described as a bug. Perhaps I should treat it as such?

I would indeed post it in the bug forum, not in the mod request.

I couldn't find the bug forum a year ago. I notice nothing has been done to fix this (short posts with common words like "and" or "the" take a long time to process -- up to 10 times as long as a regular post).

Anyone have a link to the bug forum?

Doesn't seem to happen on my board. I posted Me Too and it was posted within seconds

21 seconds on a Sunday morning on this board to post "Me too". You need to try it here.

Depending on the version you have, your common word list may or may not be functioning properly. There was a point maybe a year or two ago when a correction was made to get it to work.

Use this board to compare posting times of common words only vs. a normal post.

Since it's happening on this board, I figure it has not been corrected.

3 seconds to post above post. The search will tell you what common words this board is using (it won't search common words and will come up with nothing if you enter "the", "too", etc. etc.).

Good news is new software does not have this problem.

I did get a fix for it and submitted a bug report plus the fix (for phpBB 2.0.22).
